Marina Oborotova Obituary

Marina Oborotova

Multi-talented, cosmopolitan, and courageous, Marina Oborotova came to NM in 1992 invited by UNM to teach in the History and Political Science Departments. She had four careers during her life. She worked as a senior researcher at

IMEMO â€" USSR's leading think tank and as an Adjunct Professor at UNM. She was employed at the United States Industry Coalition, where she contributed to international efforts in the area of nuclear

non-proliferation. Marina founded and for the last 18 years was the President of Center for International Studies and the Albuquerque International Association, organizations that brought the best experts of this country to our city to address critical issues facing our nation, state and city.

Marina was passionate about art. An artist herself, she painted in pastels, and her work won local and national competitions. She also travelled

widely around

the world and frequently served as a lecturer about art, history, politics and culture on international cruises. Her lectures displayed her enormous erudition and her vibrant sense of humor. Once after an on-board talk, her listeners showered her with compliments and one of them exclaimed: "And, by the way, you look exactly like a James Bond Girl!" Marina exploded with laughter. Turning to her son, who had accompanied her, she said: "I have never received a compliment like that. Don't forget to put it into my obituary!"

Marina was a good friend with some of her friendship lasting for over 50 years, and a devoted mother. She is survived by her son Philip Skorokhodov and her Corgi, Ruzhik.

Philip, I am just now learning of Marina's passing. We knew she was ill when we last saw her at home in late December 2022, but had no idea she only had a few weeks left with us. Paul and I are both heartbroken about her passing. We have many fond memories of going on hikes and paint-outs together, especially in the fall. I e-mailed her several times last year with no reply, but just wanted her to know we were thinking of her. Then when the New Years card I sent her in January this year came back this week as "return to sender", I found her obituary, sadly. She was a joy to know, paint with, and talk to. She will be greatly missed by countless people who knew her near and far. Belated sympathy from us to you and your family. Rest in Peace, dear Marina.

Dear Philip,
Please, accept my condolences on your Mom´s passing. I knew her almost since our childhood. We went to the same college and later we worked together in IMEMO. She was a very smart, strong and intelligent person, beautiful inside and out. I also remember you as a young boy of two or three years old. I am very sorry for your loss. If I can be helpful in any way to you, please, let me know. You can contact me through e-mail or FB.
