Michael J. Kiley
Lieutenant Colonel Michael John Kiley, USAF, RET., a proud civil servant and veteran of the United States military, age 79 passed away February 5, 2024 in Henderson, NV. He was born in Manchester, New Hampshire to Brigadier General Leo A and Luna Kiley. He is survived by his wife, Jennifer Kiley, son Patrick M. Kiley and wife Kimberly Buchanan of Las Vegas, Nevada, son Damon T. Kiley and wife Julia Demarest of Seattle, Washington, sister Karen K. Hardy of Santa Fe, New Mexico, and grandchildren, Samantha, Cedar and Alex Kiley.
Born on January 18, 1945, he embarked on a remarkable journey that touched the lives of many. Colonel Kiley was a graduate of New Mexico State University in Las Cruces where he was enrolled in Air Force Reserve Officer Training Corps where he earned a Bachelor's degree in Business. Michael Kiley dedicated his life in service to his country and community, leaving behind a legacy of bravery, dedication, and compassion.. As part of his service, Colonel Kiley was awarded the following honors; Air Medal with four oak leaf clusters; AF Commendation Medal; Small Arms Expert Marksmanship Ribbon; Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal; AF Longevity Service Ribbon with two oak leaf clusters; National Defense Service Medal; Vietnam Service Medal with three bronze service stars; AF Organizational Excellence Award with one oak leaf cluster; Outstanding Unit Award with one oak leaf cluster; Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal; and the Republic of Vietnam Gallantry Cross with Palm.
Proudly serving in the United States Air Force as a pilot, Colonel Kiley flew missions in Vietnam and Korea in the RC-130, demonstrating remarkable courage and skill in the face of adversity. His contributions in piloting extended beyond the battlefield as he played a vital role in assisting NASA with Space Lab, Apollo, and other space missions, piloting the EC-135 ARIA. In 2009 he was featured in the documentary series Big, Bigger, Biggest Season 2, Episode 6 for his role as a NASA pilot that assisted the development of the International Space Station.
Following his distinguished military career, Michael Kiley continued his service as a civil servant for the Department of Energy (DOE, which went on to become National Nuclear Safety Administration, or NNSA) and the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA). His tireless dedication and expertise were instrumental in shaping policies and initiatives aimed at safeguarding the nation's security and well-being.
Michael Kiley will be remembered for his unwavering integrity, his passion for excellence, and his selfless devotion to others. His impact extended far beyond his professional accomplishments, as he touched the lives of countless individuals with his kindness, generosity, and sense of humor.
He leaves behind a legacy of honor and service, cherished by his beloved family members. Though he may be gone, his spirit will live on in the hearts of all who had the privilege of knowing him. He will be deeply missed and forever remembered.
A full military honors funeral service will be held on March 25, 2024 at 1:20pm at Southern Nevada Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Boulder City, NV.
