Richard Raskob Obituary
Richard Raskob
It is with deep sadness that we announce the death of Richard Raskob on October 14, 2025, after living a fully realized life in spite of severe heart dysfunction. His death was quiet and peaceful, as was his life.
Richard was born on June 19, 1954, and raised in Albuquerque where he was the middle of five boys born to Benjamin and Rita Russell Raskob. After graduating from Albuquerque Academy, Richard trained as a piano technician in a variety of settings and enjoyed a long and respected career. He loved the work, and was known for working collaboratively with individuals ranging from concert artists to individuals too shy to play for anyone. He liked to help them each create the best possible music in light of their individual tastes and preferences.
Following his retirement, he found joy in part-time work as a driver of Sun Van buses for the City of Albuquerque. Here again he loved the clients and the opportunity to drive them to work, medical care, or recreation participating fully in those things that give value to living.
Richard served for many years with the Raskob Foundation for Catholic Activities. This is how the staff remembered him. "Richard was a steady and compassionate presence in the life of the Foundation. He had a remarkable gift for building consensus and helping people truly listen to one another. In moments of tension or uncertainty, Richard brought calm, clarity, and kindness. He believed deeply in the power of every voice and worked tirelessly to ensure that the Foundation remained a place of belonging for all."
Richard is survived by his wife, Catherine MacLean; his brothers Russ (Betsy), Will (Kathleen), Chuck (Melissa) and Jake (Bonner); nieces Leanne (Rob), Margaret (Andrew), Claire, and Ramona (Peter); nephews Chris (Vicki), Mark (Robin), Max (Amilya), and Ben, as well as a growing generation of great-nieces and nephews. He is also survived by dear friends, including Bernadette Koh; his beloved 45-year-old African grey parrot, Jordan, and his number one cat, Joey.
Richard chose not to have a general memorial service. He preferred that people who knew him in various contexts such as his family, professional colleagues, and beloved neighbors from his decades on Anderson Avenue gather with one another, share a meal or a beverage or a walk and remember him with humor and comfort. His kind and gentle spirit will be missed beyond measure. The world is a bit dimmer with his passing, so please let his light burn in your hearts and show through your words and deeds. In lieu of flowers, please share your time or resources with your favorite organization serving the natural world, homeless companion animals, or vulnerable people. Richard loved to travel and hoped that when you journey, near or far, you'll take a few steps into unknown territory and take him with you in spirit.
