Stephen Roper Obituary
Stephen J. Roper
Steve came into this world on October 6, 1952, the same day his grandmother, Margaret Roper, turned 42. Margaret often referred to death as "going your merry way," and Steve did just that on September 28, 2025 following a long, courageous, and determined battle with Parkinson's disease.
Steve's career in banking took him across the country and around the world, with homes in Albuquerque, New Orleans, Austin, San Diego, Little Rock, and Columbus, as well as an assignment in Leeds, England, and training engagements in India.
A lifelong student of history, especially European history, Steve's fascination with the continent began with his first trip to London in 1969. During his sophomore year at the University of Notre Dame, he studied abroad in Angers, France, an experience that fostered a lifelong bond with his "French family" and ignited a passion for European travel. He proudly took Grandma Margaret to Scotland for her 80th birthday to trace their family roots. Steve delighted in introducing his nephews to the wonders of Europe. With his siblings, whether exploring historic cities or savoring fine wine, Steve filled every journey with his vast knowledge, curiosity, and humor. His employers, including Chase Bank, recognized his dedication and value, so much so that they granted him six-week unpaid leaves to pursue his European adventures.
Though he had no children of his own, Steve poured his love and generosity into the lives of his "French sister" Anne's children, Gabrielle Rosset and Laurence LeBlond; his cousin Allison Doland; niece Emma Novins; and the children of his dear college friend John Moellering: Claire, Joe, and Chris, who knew him fondly as "Uncle Steve."
Steve is survived by his partner, Cedric Jereige; sister, Mary Lynn Roper (Sheryl Paloni); brother, Mark Roper (Monica); nephews Brian "Chase" Sherman (LaVinda), Daniel Roper (Stephanie), Jacob Roper, and Tim McKee; and other cherished relatives. He was preceded in death by his parents, Joyce and Jim Roper of Raton, and his sister Karen Roper Janway. A special love also remained between Steve and his former wife, Leslie Novins.
Steve will be remembered for his intelligence, sharp wit, generous heart, and the joy and love he brought to everyone fortunate enough to know him.
A Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10:30 a.m. on Friday, October 24, 2025 at St. Thomas Aquinas Catholic Church in Rio Rancho, New Mexico. Inurnment will take place in Raton, New Mexico on October 25, 2025 at 12 noon at Mt. Calvary Cemetery.
