Stuart Kupferman Obituary

Stuart L Kupferman

Stuart L. Kupferman, 88, of Albuquerque, New Mexico, passed away peacefully on February 19, 2026, surrounded by family.

Born June 30, 1937, in Brooklyn, New York, Stuart earned a Bachelor of Science from the Polytechnic Institute of Brooklyn in 1959. He served in the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers from 1959 to 1969, completing his service at NASA's Manned Spacecraft Center in Houston, Texas. While in Boston, he met Virginia Mary Sullivan; they married in 1966 and shared 58 years together. He later earned a Master of Arts and Ph.D. in Physics from Harvard University.

Stu's career in oceanography and research included positions at the University of Rhode Island, the University of Delaware, Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution, and Sandia National Laboratories. In 1980, he moved his family to Albuquerque, where he and Virginia raised their two daughters and became active members of the community. In 2023, they relocated to Colorado Springs to be near family.

Stu loved travel, the arts, model garden railways, volunteering at the ABQ Bio Park Zoo, and exploring the Southwest with his family. He was an avid runner and hiker, and had a great love of the outdoors.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Fae and Benn Kupferman; and by his beloved wife, Virginia. He is survived by his daughters, Jocelyn (Jimmy) and Kimberly (Kris); and his granddaughters, Saige and Coraline.
