Sven Svensson Obituary
1/17/1945 - 2/8/2025
Sven was born in Yonkers, NY, to Bertil and Florence Svensson as their only child. He spent his early life working with his parents in their delicatessen in Yonkers. After graduation from Commerce High School he lived with his father's family in Gavle, Sweden for one year. Returning home, he served as a medic in the United States Airforce and later as a tank driver in the Army National Guard. Sven also obtained bachelor degrees in Anthropology, History, and Teaching, and taught in local schools. Sven was a staunch pro-life supporter of all life, including taking in numerous feral cats and abandoned dogs, and regularly feeding a family of roadrunners in his yard. He took delight in each one.
In 1989, he married the love of his life, Barbara Svensson (Frank). He is survived by his wife, Barbara; cousins, Parthy and Stuart; and scattered relatives throughout the world.
Sven was raised Catholic, and discovered his Byzantine roots as a young man. He and Barbara were dedicated and faithful parishioners at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Byzantine Catholic Church, in Albuquerque, since 1993. Sven actively worked with catechists and the Mission Society, ran the church gift shop, initiated a council of Knights of Columbus at the parish, and shared his beautiful voice in the choir and as Reader. He was also a lifelong member of Knights of Columbus and the Ancient Order of Hibernians.
Donations are welcome in his memory at Our Lady of Perpetual Help (OLPH) BCC 1837 Alvarado Drive NE, Albuquerque 87110. A Viewing will be held Thursday, February 27, 2025 at OLPH at 6:00 pm followed by a Rosary at 7:00 pm. Funeral Liturgy will be held on Friday, February 28, 2025 at the parish at 10:00 am, followed by burial at Mount Calvary Cemetery on Edith Blvd. All are welcome to return to the church hall afterwards for a Mercy Meal.
