Philippi St. Pé Obituary

Philippi "Phil" Pierre St. Pé Sr. was born on October 2, 1939, in New Orleans, LA. He courageously battled lung cancer for three years and passed away peacefully at his home in Harahan, LA on September 17, 2018. Philippi is preceded in death by his father, Oliver William St. Pé Sr., his mother Lucie Philippi St. Pé and his brother Oliver William St. Pé Jr. Philippi is survived by his loving wife of 53 years, Margaret "Peggy" Maher St. Pé, and their children Kenneth David St. Pé, daughter-in-law, Shalane, Simonne Lucie St. Pé, and Philippi P. St. Pé Jr., and his grandchildren, Pierre Philippi St. Pé, Luke Oliver St. Pé, Elise Margaret St. Pé and John David St. Pé, who refer to their grandfather as "Papere." He is also survived by his sisters Suzanne St. Pé McLellan, Renee St. Pé Allan and Andrée St. Pe' Laubscher and his adoring nieces and nephews. Phil graduated from De La Salle High School, Loyola University and Loyola School of Law, serving as president of his law school fraternity, Delta Theta Phi. He received his Juris Doctorate of Law in 1963, and went into practice law at his firm in Metairie for over 45 years. Phil's numerous professional accomplishments and service to his profession are a testament to his strong work ethic and respect for the legal profession. He was appointed and served on the Personnel Board of Jefferson Parish. He served on the Charter Revisory committee for Jefferson Parish and was awarded the Monte M. Lemann award for his work and devotion to the merit system of public employment. He served as President of the Jefferson Parish Bar Association, Board of Governors of the Louisiana State Bar, Chairman of the State Bar Ethics and Grievances committee, and was a member of the State Bar House of Delegates. He was a charter member of the Louisiana Bar Foundation. He was appointed by the Louisiana Supreme Court and served as District Judge Pro-Temp in the 24th JDC. His work as a litigator gained him selection into the "Best Lawyers in America" and "Who's Who in American Law." Phil served as outside General Counsel for the New Orleans Metropolitan Association of Realtors Inc. and the "Philippi P. St. Pé Lifetime Achievement Award" was created in his honor. He treasured his 36 years of work with the board and its staff. For the last 20 years of his career, Phil served as a mediator affiliated with MAPS in Metairie. Phil was equally passionate about golf and cherished his friends from Colonial Golf and Country Club where he served as President of both the club and its Men's Golf Association. He enjoyed his Saturday morning round of golf and Wednesday night card games. He and Peggy created many fond memories with their lifelong friends from "Colonial." Phil was an avid runner, cyclist and fitness enthusiast. He loved fishing and being on the water. He spent many days pulling his children, their friends and cousins on water skis in Bay St. Louis, MS. Family and friends looked forward to his charbroiled oysters which were a staple at holiday gatherings. He had a love/hate relationship with the Saints, LSU football and baseball. Above all, Phil was a gentlemen and a Christian, who treated everyone with dignity and respect. His opinions, which were often sought, were always judiciously provided with fairness and kindness as his guiding principles. He will be greatly missed. Our sincere thanks to the staff of Lakeside Hospice and especially Melvin McGee for their loving care. The family invites you to celebrate Phil's life on Saturday, September 22, 2018, at St. Rita Catholic Church in Harahan, LA. Visitation begins at 9 a.m. The Funeral Mass is at 11 a.m.. Burial will take place at Lake Lawn Park Cemetery in New Orleans, LA thereafter. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donating to Lakeside Hospice and/or St. Rita Catholic Church. Philippe was one of the kindest and most gentle and down to earth men I know. His presence brought a calmness to the environment and he was always able to come up with solutions even to the most difficult situations. While he will be deeply missed, his ethics, integrity and love of mankind will live on through those whose lives he touched both personally and in the professions of law and real estate. I pray God's blessings and comfort upon Peggy and each of his family members and friends who love him dearly!

I have known Phil for years professionally as an agent and also as a dear friend over 30 years. He and his wife Peggy will always be in my thoughts. I pray for Peggy and her family for God's comfort. We know that Phil and my husband who is in heaven are probably picking up their golf game where the left off.

Phil it was a pleasure knowing you and being able to get good advice from you through the years. I did so enjoy our time on Professional Standards and will miss you a lot.

I always admired the calm with which Phil approached problems. He was thorough and could always see both sides with clarity. His total and balanced understanding served him well and anyone he represented. Heaven is the winner in his passing. Although he is sorely missed on earth he leaves a legacy larger than life. I feel blessed to have known Phil.

Dear Phil, How many wonderful memories you gave to us. Always a smile and a fun joke or two. Always ready to help and support your less than capable cousin(s). While life moved us apart as we raised families, you were always a firm part of who we are and how we faced the future. Your Aunt Carrie and Uncle Eddie dearly loved you. You brought more joy than you could ever know. Hugs throughout Eternity

Phil was my "neighbor" around the corner here at the office, and I enjoyed running into him at the golf course. He was a man of integrity, honor, and always pleasant, positive, and considerate; and would help whenever possible. Phil was a mentor and friend. God Bless

Phil was a southern gentleman. He always had a smile to share. He also was the most knowledgeable attorney I have ever met. He will be missed.

One of the most genuine, kind and loving men I have ever had the pleasure to know. I will miss seeing him tend to his yard, arranging the grand Christmas display planned by Mrs. Peggy; he was always quick with a smile and a wave. I will miss his spontaneous delivery of charbroiled oysters to my door. My deepest condolences to you all, we truly loved Mr. Phil.
