Gregory Delaney Obituary
Steven "Greg" Delaney, 49, of Savannah, TN, formerly of Covington, passed away suddenly on August 22, surrounded by his boys during their guys weekend. He leaves behind a legacy of kindness, adventure, and an unmatched ability to fix anything.
Greg was a master mechanic; everyone knew him as "there ain't nothing Greg can't fix." Throughout his career, he worked at Baskin Racing, turning his hobby into a job. At Jim's Towing, he reconnected with his lifelong best friend and enjoyed every obstacle they conquered together. He moved to the lake to get away from mechanic work, but that didn't last long. He opened Dry Creek Repair Shop and was overloaded with transmissions and side-by-sides. His expertise knew no bounds – if it had an engine, wheels, or needed repair, Greg was the man to call. At all times, he could be found on the phone, patiently walking someone through fixing their car, truck, side-by-side, buggy, or rat rod. His generosity with his time and knowledge was legendary among friends and strangers alike.
Greg was preceded in death by his mother, Deborah "Debbie" Delaney, and his father, Charles Delaney, known lovingly as "Ol Man". His four-legged best friend, Rosco, left this earth just one day after Greg.
Greg's greatest joy was his beloved wife, Mallory, and their beautiful blended family. He is survived by his daughters, Erin Delaney (Andrew Taylor) and Kaiden Hanks (Brandon), who was lovingly adopted into the family in 2015, and Christian (Katie Geary), who joined the family through the love in Greg's heart. Greg and Mallory opened their home and hearts to so many others, treating them like their own children. If we wrote down all the people they took in, we would not have enough paper. His legacy lives on through his cherished grandchildren: Spencer Hanks, Garett and Jasper Taylor, Bryson, Scarlett, and Montgomery (MaeMae) Geary, who all affectionately called him "Turbo". He is also survived by his Aunt Shirley Thompson, who always called him "my Greg," and his sister Samantha Delaney and his two nieces, Shayla Walk and Sydney Taylor.
An adventurer at heart, Greg lived life to the fullest alongside Mallory. He traveled any trail as long as she would let him – and sometimes even when she wasn't watching. Their adventures took them on cruises to the Caribbean and Alaska, snowmobiling through Montana around Yellowstone, and climbing mountains in every park and state they visited. As a proud member of the Dry Creek Riding Club, Greg was in his element exploring the great outdoors on his side-by-side with the guys. He was smiling and enjoying his guys weekend that he had looked forward to for months.
Greg also loved his home at the lake, and having his and Mallory's boat filled to full capacity and even overflowing most of the time. If it had wheels, he rode it. If it was broken, he fixed it. If someone needed help, he was there – no questions asked. He was the true example of how you should treat others, and those who knew him would say he could not have been any kinder.
Greg's sudden departure leaves a void that can never be filled, but his spirit of adventure, his generous heart, and his can-do attitude will live on in all who were blessed to know him. He never said I can't fix that….He said, "I've never done it, but I'll figure it out". Whether you were family, friend, or a stranger whose vehicle broke down, Greg treated everyone with the same warmth and willingness to help.
Funeral services will be held at 4 p.m. on Thursday, August 28 at the Covington Funeral Home chapel with interment to follow in R. H. Munford Cemetery in Covington. The family will receive friends from 6 p.m. until 8 p.m. on Wednesday, August 27 at the funeral home.
Instead of flowers, the family suggests all donations go to the Greg Delaney memorial fund, set up at any InSouth Bank location or Vemo @MalloryDelaney
