Wayne Ewing Obituary
Wayne Alfred Ewing, 90, of Millington, TN, passed away peacefully at home on September 27, 2025, just one day after his 90th birthday. Born on September 26, 1935, in Lucy, TN, Wayne was the beloved son of Alfred Albert Ewing and Nellie Mae Owen.
Wayne spent his early years in Lucy, attending Lucy Elementary and later attended Millington Central High School. As a young man, he worked alongside his father and brother, helping to manage the family's Ewing farm. These formative years instilled in Wayne a deep appreciation for hard work and family values.
In his twenties, Wayne started a family with his loving wife and children. He served with pride in the Army National Guard for four years. Wayne went on to work for 26 years and retired with Shelby County Road Department and later went back to work and retired a second time after 12 years of service as a bus driver with Shelby County Schools. His dedication and work ethic were evident in every role he took.
Wayne's love for family extended beyond the home. He cherished time spent at the family vacation home in FairField Bay, Arkansas, where he loved the mountains and Greer's Ferry Lake, which brought him endless joy. He was always eager to include friends and family in these adventures, whether it meant a boat ride, a day of fishing, or showing them the beautiful sites.
Growing up, Wayne found happiness in simple pleasures-entertaining family and his kid's friends, tending to the yard, and keeping the pool sparkling clean. Sometimes quiet and a man of few words, Wayne's softer side showed through to those who knew him well. When he was happy, he was known to hum a tune, and every now and then surprise us with a quick dance or a burst of his signature dry humor, leaving everyone laughing until their sides hurt. Wayne was known for making everyone feel welcomed and valued no matter what they were going through.
Wayne loved to give friends of the family special nicknames with a unique twist. That made them feel a part of the family. He always had his candy bar stash ready for the friends after school and some would race dad to see who could get to them first.
Wayne's reliability and compassion touched many lives. He was the first to visit when someone was ill and made a point to attend every family or friend's funeral, offering comfort and support to those in need. His presence was a testament to how deeply he cared for those around him.
All of his grandchildren and great grandchildren were a wide age range, but they all knew he was always there for them and to some their father figure. They absolutely loved and adored their Poppy/Pops and cherished the fun memories they had together.
In his later years, Wayne adopted the motto, "You've got to keep moving, no matter how stiff your joints become." or "If you want it done right, you have to do it yourself" Even at 83, he was known to climb onto the roof to clear limbs, demonstrating remarkable strength and endurance that often put those much younger to shame.
For the last decade, Wayne lived with his youngest daughter, husband and grand-daughter, where it was a weekly treat getting him to Mexican ice cream, cupcakes or a simple piece of pecan pie. Every morning, he couldn't wait to drink his coffee which made the highlight of his day. Wayne also developed a special bond with the family's pets and became lovingly known as the "animal whisperer." His gentle nature drew the animals to him, especially his loyal cat Kiki, who stayed faithfully by his side until his last breath.
Wayne was preceded in death by his parents Alfred and Nellie Ewing; two brothers, Ray Ewing and Gene Ewing; two sisters, Annette Ewing and Joy Hendren; his daughter, Pam Ewing, and his granddaughter Destiny Ewing.
He is survived by his son Jerry Ewing (Barbara); daughter Angel Collins (Duane); grandchildren, Jaimie Flynn (Dustin), Josh Ewing (Samantha), the late Destiny Ewing, and Bella Walker; and six great-grandchildren, Alysson, Jace, Isaiah, Easton, Elise, and Elijah.
A visitation will be held on Friday October 3rd, 2025, from 12:00 to 2:00 pm followed by the celebration of life service at 2:00pm at Covington Funeral Home. Interment with military honors will follow at Big Creek Cemetery in Millington. Friends and family are invited to gather and share memories, honoring the life and legacy of Wayne Ewing.
We will always remember Wayne for his warmth, quick wit and sense of humor, and the love he gave to others. His spirit will live on in the hearts of all who knew him.
