ALbert Ball Obituary

Albert William Ball was born November 6, 1914 in Aberdeen, Washington and passed away on April 10th at the age of 99 in College Place, Washington. He was preceded in death by his sons, Albert Newton Ball (Newt), Albert William Ball, Jr. (Bert), Lawrence Ball (Larry), and Gary Ball; as well as his parents, William and Ethel Ball; his sisters, Retta Jacobson, Helen Moran, and Lois Smith; and brothers, Harold Ball and John Ball.

Albert moved to Alaska in 1931 at the age of 16, joining his uncle in Aleknagik. He worked as a trapper and commercial fisherman. His career as a salmon fisherman lasted 82 years, with only one missed season. He established a fishing operation at Ekuk that now includes four generations of family members.

Along with his brother-in-law, Myron Moran, Albert formed Western Alaska Airlines in 1953 operating out of Dillingham.

After retirement, Albert and his wife, Eileen began spending winters in Washington State, settling in College Place nearly 20 years ago. They continued traveling to Ekuk each summer, many times using the "ALCAN".

Albert was involved in community and church service throughout his life. He was instrumental in the building of several churches in Alaska and Washington.

Albert's life and legacy will be remembered every day by his family and friends. As a lifelong Christian, Albert knew that his future was certain. He was looking forward to that day when Christ will appear in the heavens to call His children home.

Albert is survived by his wife, Eileen; his children, Gerald Ball and Jean O'Connor, step-children, Virginia Johnson, Fred Ball, Doug Ball, and Linda Kozak; sisters, Frances Wren-Tommila and Carol McMichael; and many grandchildren and great grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held Tuesday, April 15th in College Place, Washington. An Alaskan memorial service is being planned for this summer at Ekuk, Alaska. Albert's remains will be buried in Dillingham, near his son, Bert.

Dear Uncle Albert, We were so fortunate to have known you. As a child I remember your wonderful visits to Spokane and how you would completely fill our freezer to the top with steaks! How grateful we were to be with you on your birthday last year, with Jerry and the family. You will be greatly missed!

We will miss him. Each day he used to walk down our street and go to the WWU track where he would walk 12 laps. He was an inspirational, kind and caring person.
