Allan Skinner Obituary

Anchorage resident Allan George Skinner, 76, died September 29, 2012, at Providence Medical Center in Anchorage, AK after a battle with diabetes and liver cancer.

Allan was born on August 16, 1936, near Suring, Wis. to Russell and Helen Skinner and was raised in Oregon, Wis.

Mr. Skinner graduated with a bachelor's degree in conservation from the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point in 1959, and began a federal career shortly after. He was recently presented with a certificate for 50 years of federal service, 38 of which have been with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) Alaska District. He spent time working as a park ranger for the National Park Service in several places, including Theodore Roosevelt National Park North Dakota, Yellowstone National Park, Lake Mead National Recreation Area in Nevada, and Death Valley. He also worked as a USACE park ranger in California and Indiana. In 1974, he heard about an opening in the Alaska District and made the journey. He always wanted to go to Alaska and his brother was stationed on Elmendorf at the time.

He enjoyed hunting, fishing, and trapping in earlier years, and telling stories of such in his later years. He liked listening to classic country music, telling stories, road trips, reading publications from all across the states, listening to weekend and nightly radio programs, and being with friends. Allan most enjoyed sharing stories amongst his friends.

Allan was a long-time member of the NRA and many other similar organizations.

He is survived by his sister-in-law, Mary Skinner of Arizona; and his niece, Lynn Trembly of Arizona, along with countless friends across the country.

Allan was preceded in death by his mother, Helen Skinner; and his brother Darrell Skinner.

Allan will be buried at Prairie Mound Cemetery in Oregon, Wisconsin with his family.

At first he was a guide for my wife and I when we moved to Alaska. He then became a very dear friend. Allan and his VW will always be in our memoirs.
