Birline Mitchell Obituary

Anchorage resident Birline Mitchell, 90, died Jan. 4, 2009, in Anchorage after a lengthy illness. He "went home to be with our Lord," his family wrote.
Services are scheduled for noon Tuesday at Shiloh Missionary Baptist Church with the Rev. Alonzo Patterson officiating. Visitation will be from 10:45-11:45 a.m. at the church.
Birline was born July 4, 1918, in Richard, Texas, to loving parents Patsy Green Mitchell and John Mitchell.
He served honorably in the Army from 1942 to 1945.
Birline was a professional dry cleaner operator for many years, retiring from his family-owned business. In 1959, he came to Alaska, where he met and married his wife of 48 years, Ola Mae Mitchell.
His family wrote: "Birline was always an inspiration for us all, raising his stepchildren as his own and proved throughout his life what it meant to be a Christian. He was a devoted and loving husband and father and will be greatly missed by his family and friends. He served diligently as a devoted member and deacon at the Greater Friendly Temple Church of God in Christ until his illness."
He is survived by his loving wife, Ola Mitchell; son, Earl Mitchell and wife of Houston, Texas; daughters, Marilyn Mitchell and Ruby Black of San Francisco and Gloria Ortera of Anchorage; grandchildren, Forrest LeViege of Anchorage and Tonia LeViege of Atlanta; great-grandchildren, Taion LeViege-Martin of Seattle and Tyler Ward of Atlanta; brothers and sisters-in-law, Sam and Eula Mitchell and T.C. and Jocia Mitchell, all of Houston, Texas; and brother-in-law, Tommie Cleveland of Anchorage.
He was preceded in death by his parents; brother, John Mitchell; and sisters, Addie Mitchell Joseph and Ocia Mitchell Dorsey.
Arrangements are with Janssen's Evergreen Memorial Chapel.

My papa was my heart, He was an amazing man who would give the shirt off his back. Though he could not read or write he decided to return to school in his 70's to learn how to read and write. My children and I would help him in the evenings and keep him encouraged becuase he was so determined to read his bible. Oh my goodness I will miss him dearly. Our talks, his baked peanuts, watching the baseball games together, My granmother and papa fussing in there own loving way and them watching us kids immitate them in the ways of there loving fun. Papa used to love to hum a tune while sliding across the floors of the house in his bedroom slippers and peeking in on the family to see what we were doing. Once he saw that we were ok he would turn and go back to his room while still humming his tune. He recieved the name papa from Taion his 1st born great grandson in the 80's and the name just stuck. We love you papa and you will always be in my heart. You we be truly missed

Even though I didn't know Mr. Mitchell well, I felt like I knew him because of the loving stories his granddaughter Tonia always shared with me. She loved her grandfather dearly and spoke so very highly of him. I know that he will truly be missed. My prayers are with the entire family and I know he is safe and comforted now in the arms of our Lord. Rest peacefully Mr. Mitchell, God Bless you.
