Bonnie Johnson Obituary

Anchorage resident Bonnie June Johnson, 71, died May 8, 2007, at home.
A memorial service was held Saturday at Our Savior's Lutheran Church in Nome. A social gathering and potluck was afterward at the Pioneer Hall.
Bonnie was born to Ruben and Evelyn Rainey on June 30, 1935, in Longview, Wash. She was raised on a farm on Mount Pleasant, where she lived with her parents and older sister, Gloria.
After graduating from Kelso High School in 1954, she studied accounting at Lower Columbia College.
In about 1957, Bonnie's pioneering spirit brought her to Alaska. She drove the Alaska Highway to Anchorage with a couple of girlfriends in a convertible sedan. She soon began working as a stewardess for Cordova Airlines. This marked the beginning of her lifelong passion for Alaska.
Bonnie married Cecil Johnson, an Alaska state trooper, in 1961. They lived in Anchorage, Fairbanks, Juneau and Nome. Between 1962 and 1965, they had three sons, Douglas, Matthew and Norman. Bonnie and Cecil eventually divorced. Bonnie's only daughter, Julie, was born in 1969.
As a single mother, she found that life in rural Alaska came with many challenges. Bonnie spent the next 20 years raising her four children "and vacuuming," her family wrote.
In 1970, she began working for the Alaska Department of Revenue and later the Division of Motor Vehicles in Nome, where she continued working until she retired in 2000 after 30 years of public service. Many "Nomeites" remember her as the "drivers license lady." During her years at DMV, Bonnie also spent time working for the Alaska State Troopers, which she enjoyed greatly and where she made many lasting friendships.
Bonnie loved her family, friends and home in Nome. Weekend picnicking and camping trips were a time for family adventure. She enjoyed many hobbies, which included quilting, gardening and collecting beach glass with her grandchildren. She also loved spending time in the kitchen, cooking dishes that brought her family and friends together.
Outside home and work, Bonnie found time to remain active in the community, even with the challenges of being a single mom. Among her favorites were her associations with the Pioneers, Eastern Star and the museum.
Bonnie is survived by her sister, Gloria; sons, Douglas, Matthew and Norman; daughter, Julie; daughters-in-law, Robin, Colleen and Nelda Johnson; son-in-law, Rick Patrick; grandchildren, Monica, Kassie, Jenelle, Quinten, Amanda, Devynn, Dylan, Meagan and Kaitlyn; and several nieces, nephews, cousins and close friends.
In 2004, Bonnie was diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease. Shortly thereafter, she moved to Anchorage to live with her daughter's family. She lived with them until she died peacefully while surrounded by her children and their friends.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Bonnie's name to the Alzheimer's Disease Resource Agency of Alaska, 1750 Abbott Road, Anchorage 99507.
Arrangements were by Witzleben Family Funeral Homes and Crematory.

I'm going to miss how nice she was to everyone in the family, and how she would always listen to me play my guitar for her. I will miss her

I'm going to miss Bonnie coming to my house with my mom when she was on duty taking care of her and how she loved my dog and cared for her, and showed affection to her. She will always be in my heart.

What a blessing it has been being a caregiver to Bonnie. She was a friend and confident to me. She would tell me not to buy anything black it would make me look older, when we would be out shopping. She helped me pick out a red coat that makes me think of her. The week before she died she looked at me after I did her hair and make-up and said I love you Igave her a kiss and said I love you too. That was like a piece of heaven to me. After being around Julie for a couple of years she made me hope I could be the kind of Mother that would want my daughter to take care of me the way Julie did. Bonnie is in my heart forever and I can't wait to see her again. I am sure she has met my mom in heaven and they hit it off they are the same age and both alot of fun .Love Barb

I knew Bonnie in two ways--as the DMV lady and also as my friend's mother. As the DMV lady, she seemed so mean and tough, but I guess you have to be when you're risking your own life going out on the road giving driving tests to teens! But as my friend's mother, Bonnie was so sweet, kind, and patient. Our condolences go out to her family.

Bonnie June Johnson, I only learned her full name at the services In Nome. Bonnie and I became friends after my wife Dee became her care giver. Bonnie was often in our home and I had occasion to spend time with her. Bonnie always had a wonderful smile for me. Even when she felt bad she would see it was me and smile. She was a very loving person and always wanted to go home to Nome. I grew to love Bonnie and miss her very much.

Julie, Doug, Matt & Norman, daughter in-laws, grand children & sister Gloria. Bonnie loved her family so much! You guys were the center of her life. We enjoyed Bonnie's visits to NC so much, she would always tell us about the Family and what was going on in Nome & California with all of you guys! Gloria, you were a wonderful sister to Bonnie and she missed not living closer to you and always talked of good times that you guys shared. We will miss Bonnie's smiling face and wonderful hugs she always had for us! We are thinking of all of you at this time and hope to have Julie always keep us "up dated" and in touch with the Johnson family! Love you all

I never thought when I first started taking care of Bonnie how much she would become entwined in my heart. She wrapped herself around that warm place because she was such a genuine and loving person and we shared so many wonderful times together. I loved your mother very much and may the memory of her good life always give each of you comfort.

Julie, Doug,Matt, and Norman, I first met your mother when she was working at the Dept. of Revenue with Stan Andersen in the building next to the Bering Sea Club. Over the years, she provided a very valuable service to Nome and the area and she will not be forgotten. She was so proud of her new home on Carsten Way and was glad to have folks come and visit. Our thoughts and prayers are with you. Linda & Jim

Bonnie always had good humor. She gave me my driver's test in Nome when I was 16. We got stuck & the truck died out on the Beltz road. I was in a panic! She passed me anyway, but not without making some good jokes first. Years later, I saw a beautiful quilt that she made for her daughter and I became inspired to be a quilter myself. Over the years it has been a great hobby that has given me a lot of enjoyment. I'll never forget how I got started. Amanda and I recently shopped for fabric for her first quilt which we will begin making this summer - thanks to her Grandma.

Matt, Julie, Doug, Norman and families: As you know, Bonnie was like a second-mother to me; she took me under her wing and seemingly without effort made me feel like part of your family. She had such a big, kind heart and she taught me so much about a lot of things... cooking and baking (I was a horrible student); sewing (again, bad student) and gardening (those lessons actually worked!). To this day, whenever I see wild iris it reminds me of the many hours we spent together gathering plants for her garden. I know you're all proud to be counted as her children, just as I'm proud to have known her. My thoughts are with all of you.

One of the first people I met when I came to Nome was Bonnie, she was my landlady and we spent many hours sitting in my living room talking, drinking tea and she was always so pleasant. I enjoyed her company dearly.

My family and I have fond memories of Bonnie. She was always so friendly. I remember the day I got my driver's license, and how she chuckled at my Mom as she was processing my license, and informed her that Mom's own license had (just) expired! My parents and I send our condolences, and our best wishes to her family. (From Joe & Nell Martin, and Jan Martin Hutchens)
