Charlotte Duncan Obituary

Anchorage resident Charlotte M. Duncan, 61, formerly of Juneau, died Nov. 17, 2009, at Providence Alaska Medical Center in Anchorage.

A viewing will be at 1 p.m. Friday, with a memorial service at 2 p.m., today at Kehl's Legacy Funeral Home in Anchorage. A second viewing and memorial service will be in Juneau. The viewing will be at 3 p.m. Sunday at the Alaska Mortuary Chapel, with the service scheduled for 5 p.m. Monday at the Northern Light United Church in Juneau.

Charlotte was born April 11, 1948, in Juneau. She graduated from Juneau-Douglas High School and later attended school in Los Angeles. She held various jobs including working for the state of Alaska, Tlingit Haida Regional Housing Authority, office manager of the Tlingit Haida Regional Electrical Authority and the Bureau of Indian Affairs.

Charlotte loved to read, cook and watch old movies. She also found great joy in knitting and in making "dreamcatchers" for her grandchildren to hang by their beds. She had an unmatched green thumb. She enjoyed outdoor gardening and was especially talented in maintaining a great indoor garden. Her home is filled with green plants that she nurtured for many years.

In recent years, she took special joy in her many grandchildren. Nothing was more special than the time she spent with them while they painted her nails, gave her hair a new look, or just enjoying the time with them as they entertained as only grandchildren can.

Charlotte was preceded in death by her parents Carl Sr. and Frances Marvin.

She is survived by her husband, Jim Duncan of Anchorage; her daughter, Kathy Gilbert of Portland, Ore., whom she loved dearly; stepchildren, Jim Duncan Jr., Desiree Duncan and Michelle Duncan of Juneau, Derek (Tamiko) Duncan, Jon (Claudine) Duncan and Marc Duncan of San Jose, Calif., and Caron Duncan of Kake; and 12 grandchildren. She is also survived by her brothers and sisters-in-law, Carl Jr. and Rita Marvin of Juneau, George and Alice Marvin, Larry and Pat Marvin, all of Anchorage, and Reggie and Wally Marvin of Juneau.

I am so sorry to lose my little sister, I am the oldest of the Marvin brothers children, Nick was my father, hers was Carl Sr. Us cousins didn't call each other cousins, we were a close family, we were brother and sisters, that was the way our Paternal grandparents wanted it. So it is a vary big loss for me, I will miss her very much, but I do have happy memories of her.

She also cared very much for my husband Ernie, he grew to love her as sister, he will miss her too.

Jim, as you know how close the family are, please know that we appreciate all you have done for her and how you loved her. Know that we care a lot for you, also, remember you were adopted by Ernie's family into the Chookaneidi, that never stops, you are one of them.
