Chris Karp Obituary

Former Alaska resident Chris F. Karp, 72, died peacefully July 5, 2008, at Sacred Heart Medical Center in Eugene, Ore. Family members were by his side.
A memorial service will be in August in Council, outside Nome. His final resting place will be at the Willamette National Cemetery in Portland, Ore.
Chris was born May 27, 1936, in Baker City, Ore. He was a 1954 graduate of Springfield High School, where he excelled in track and field and basketball. He was involved in Boy Scouts and in 1953 was granted the coveted Eagle Badge as well as the Silver Award.
Chris served in the Army 298th Signal Corps stationed in France from 1955 to 1957. On return to the states, Chris enrolled at the University of Oregon.
In 1960, Chris met Carlene Millet at a New Year's Eve party and less than a year later they married in Reno, Nev.
Chris graduated from the University of Oregon with a Bachelor of Science degree in health, physical education and recreation in 1964.
In 1970, the family moved to Nome, where Chris was food service director at Beltz Regional Boarding School and later the assistant superintendent of Alaska State Operated Schools. He retired in 1987 from the Department of Transportation, where he was the administrative officer for the Northwest region.
"A piece of their hearts will always remain in Nome," his family recalled.
"He and Carlene left Nome to return to Oregon in 1987. They spent some of each year exploring the states and never missed an Oregon football game.
"Chris is remembered as a kind, gentle, calm and steady force. He was an honorable man who earned the respect of all who knew him. His presence will be missed terribly, but each of us carries his influence with us every day."
Chris is survived by his wife of 47 years, Carlene; brother, Bill Karp and wife Mary of Eugene; daughters, Robin and husband Doug Johnson of Nome and Merna Karp of Seattle; sons, Jon Karp and wife Buffy of Wilsonville, Ore., and David Karp and wife Debbie of Anchorage; and 11 grandchildren.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be sent in memory of Chris Karp to the Nome Volunteer Fire Department, Box 281, Nome 99762.

We met Chris in Nome last year. One knew he was a genlteman right away. I mentioned that his hat was cool and that I liked it. A short time later I met his son David in Anchorage. He said, "Dad mentioned you liked his hat, here's one for you". Our sympathy goes out to Chris' family. God bless each of you.
