Christopher Leach Obituary

Lt. Christopher M. Leach, age 41, of Wilmington, DE, died tragically on September 24, 2016. Chris was born on September 10, 1975, in Wilmington, DE. He was the son of Frances H. Leach. His father, Michael F. Leach, pre-deceased him in 2004. Chris was a fourteen-year veteran of the City of Wilmington Fire Department. He began his fire service career as a volunteer with the Talleyville Fire Company in 1993. In 1997, he was hired as a full-time employee at the Claymont Fire Company. In 2002, he was hired by the City of Wilmington Fire Department where he proudly served until his death in the line of duty. As a volunteer firefighter at Talleyville, Chris served in various line officer positions including Lieutenant, Captain, 2nd Assistant Chief, and 1st Assistant Chief. As a Career Firefighter/Emergency Medical Technician at the Claymont Fire Company he was introduced to technical rescue and this became his area of expertise. On September 16, 2002, Chris was hired by the City of Wilmington Fire Department and successfully completed the Fire Academy as part of the 32nd Recruit Class. Following graduation, he was assigned to Engine 4B Platoon, where he soon became qualified to drive Engine 4 after a little over 6 months in the company. In 2005, Chris was transferred to the Special Operations Command on Engine 1B. He also served on the New Castle County Task Force 1, the local technical rescue team, where he held various positions of leadership. Throughout his career, Chris received numerous commendations and awards, including commendations for professional development, two unit citations for technical rescue, the Kiwanis Firefighter Award, the Life Saving Award from Claymont Fire Company, the Heroic Fireman of the Year from Claymont Fire Company, and the Heroic Fireman of the Year Award for New Castle County. Chris attended St. Edmond's Academy and graduated from Salesianum High School in 1994. In addition to his associate degree from Delaware Technical Community College in Fire Protection Engineering Technology, he earned a Bachelor of Science Degree in Fire Science Administration from Waldorf University in June 2015. He was pursuing a Master of Arts Degree in Organizational Leadership with a concentration in Fire/Rescue Executive Leadership at the time of his death. In addition to his mother, he is survived by three children, Brendan, Abby, and Megan and their mother, Kelli Zullo; his sister, Kathryn, and her wife Carolee LeNoir; and his fiancée, Kate Maxwell and her two boys, Landon and Casey Fox. Visitation with family and friends will be held on Friday, September 30, from 10 a.m. until 12 noon immediately followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at St. Elizabeth Catholic Church, 809 South Broom St., Wilmington Delaware 19805. Iam so sorry for your lost. When I join Claymont Fire Co
In 1995 Chris was our pay personal. If it was not for Eric
Haley? I Have not met one our pay staff. Chris took the time out
To shake my hand and welcome in the fire service. It felt good when
I took part in going to Talleyville Christmas party that first year
As well looking at the apparatus too. There have times that just
Wanted to go to Wilmington Fire Co? Just to say Hi to Chris and
The gang as well as Eric Haley just get a Wilmington Fire Co
T Shirt like Recsue 1 or the Fire Co that Chris work at and were
Eric work at to. So. It was and honor and the Privilege to have
Met Chris through Eric Haley. Chris will be deeply miss.
Sincerely. Rick Scarcelli
Claymont firefighter.

I'm sorry for your family's loss. I have a lot of good memories of Chris from Boy Scout Troop 63, Wilmington, DE. The troop had a lot of activities including scout meetings, camping trips, and summer camps. Chris was two years older than me and I remember him in leadership positions in the troop (i.e. Patrol Leader). He was friendly and he never hesitated to take on ambitious challenges during competitions. During one of the summer camps he earned the Life Saving merit badge, which requires a lot of swimming, treading water, and water rescue activities. He was proud of the achievement and provided positive encouragement for others.

Dearest Fran and family,

You and your family are in my thoughts and prayers.
Fran, I wanted to share the following with you. My daughter, Courtney Papnicolas, is the Middle School Counselor at Ursuline. Last year, she initiated a community service project with her seventh grade students by adopting the Wilmington Fire Company. She had the girls make baskets of goodies for each fire station and hand delivered them with the girls. Courtney said each station was so kind in spending time with her and the girls. In fact, the woman fire fighter who was also injured, had spent time touring the new station in Trolley Square with the girls.
Courtney will continue to have the Wilmington Fire Company as Ursuline's 7th grade community project. She was so saddened by the tragedy.
Take care.. Mary Ann Sley

I remember a sweet, shy smile from Chris.

He grew from a sweet boy into a strong and brave man, a good father, and a brother to many of his fellow firefighters.

While his life ended too soon, he died a hero's death. He life had the sole purpose of loving and saving others...and this is no small thing. In fact, this is everything.

Prayers of comfort are needed for all he has left behind, especially his children. What an absence they must feel, my heart aches for them.

I am proud of our Wilmington community...Chris will have a legacy that will live on forever.

Rest in peace.

I will always remember when we were at Florida Sea Base and we were playing tug of war on the last night and we put wagers down, if i won i got his Oakley sunglasses but if he won I could not talk on the plane ride home. That 2 hours from Tampa to Philadelphia was the quietest I've ever been. You will be missed Mr. Leach

On behalf of the officers and members of the Swoope Vol Fire Co (VA), we extend our deepest and most heartfelt condolences to the family, friends and 'brothers' of Lt. Leach.
Although not known well, more in passing, it was clear Chris was a good man, talented firefighter and a fine officer with love, drive and passion for the job that is not always found these days.
We mourn with you all, and wish there was something we could do, to contribute, to help with your pain and sorrow.
God bless each of you.
Rest easy friend, we've got it from here.

May the road rise up to meet you.
May the wind always be at your back.
May the sun shine warm upon your face,
and rains fall soft upon your fields.
And until we meet again,
May God hold you in the palm of His hand.

My heartfelt sympathy and prayers are extended to the Leach family. Christopher's mother and I taught together many years ago. I know how proud Fran was of her children and can only imagine how painful this earthly passing of Chris. God bless each one who has been touched by this young man's life.
