Douglas Demarest Obituary

Douglas Lawrence Demarest - beloved husband, father, son, brother, friend - ended his life on Tuesday morning, Dec. 29, 2015. Doug was born in Minneapolis, Minn., on July 15, 1973. He is survived by his wife, Kate Demarest; their children, Simon (4) and Silvia (1½); his mother, Diane Ballentine; his brother, Bradley Demarest; and many aunts, uncles and cousins. Doug's father, Larry Demarest, preceded him in death. Doug completed his elementary education at the Marcy Open School. He graduated as a valedictorian from Minneapolis South High School in 1991, and completed a Bachelors degree in Physics from Grinnell College in 1995, where he ran the 800 meters in track and field. Doug possessed a razor sharp intellect, a brave and loyal heart, and a playful, mischievous spirit. He was an adventurer, a traveler, a gifted outdoor photographer, a skilled whitewater kayaker and a general lover of rivers, mountains, oceans and wilderness. Doug shared this love of wild places with countless students as an Outward Bound instructor for many years, spending summers in Alaska. Doug and Kate made Anchorage, Alaska, their home in 2010. Here, Doug devoted his considerable talents to building a successful small business. He delighted in raising his young children and watching them learn and grow. Doug's son shared that that his daddy enjoyed playing Candyland and going outside to play at the park. His daughter had recently mastered the phrase "I love you, Daddy." Doug was a fierce supporter of social justice and equality. His family suggests memorials in his name to the Alaska Innocence Project, www.alaskainnocence.org; the American Civil Liberties Union of Alaska, http://www.acluak.org/; or the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention, https://www.afsp.org/alaska.

Coming across Doug's name at work recently, and realized during the business of the day to day, I never sent or acknowledged my deep condolences.
I worked with Doug through Patagonia. I don't know if our published photographers ever really know how special they are to us, especially to Jane & myself.
We've shared our life over the phone with many, and in some ways, have been a sounding board & lifeline to them.
Doug was a true talent & good man. I'm sad for all those who Love him. The loss never goes away.

I will always remember the first time I met Doug in line to register for freshman year. I will miss him deeply and value the last photograph he gave me and send my heart felt condolences to his family. I have two 4 year olds myself and my heart goes out to you Kate, I wish I'd had a chance to meet you. Know that Doug was loved and that if you need anything there is a large Grinnell contingent ready to help. Love, Melanie Parson Short

I knew Doug very well during his time at OB. He was a great friend, we shared many adventures, and he was a mentor to me in all things whitewater. Doug was even kind enough to shoot the photography at my wedding. We lost touch over the years with exception of a chance meeting on the Kahiltna Glacier in 2006. I'm sure he was an inspiring Father. Words cannot express how sad this news is and I hope that his children will come to know him through his photography and stories from their Mother (whom I never met). My sincerest condolences.

Doug was a very special friend to me in college and I so wish I had stayed in closer touch since then. To his family and current friends, I want to send love and condolences. He was sensitive, caring and compassionate. He was inspiring and adventurous. His spirit was unlike any other I have known this is a huge loss of the light Doug brought to this world.

Doug's father, Larry, was a good friend of mine at Plymouth Church in Minneapolis. I saw him and his sons on various occasions and in his home. I had great respect for Larry - and the way he cared for his family. I'm so saddened to learn of Doug's death. May your family know that there is a small cadre of Plymouth members who remember some of them with respect and delight. We are praying together for peace everywhere. Mary Lou Judd Carpenter

I worked with Doug at YMCA Camp Camp Widjiwagan. He had a bright engaging smile, a playful attitude and a wonderful gift for putting his campers at ease. He was a kind and loving young man and he will be missed. - Karen Pick

The loss of a young man I held as a baby, taught how to blow his nose and watch grow into a man is impossible to express. Diane, Brad and the family I didn't know my thoughts, prayers and love go with you. I will only remember the marvelous kid who had my heart with his smile.
