Edna Bennett Obituary

Longtime Alaskan, Edna Irene Bennett, 87 passed, January 9, 2014 at the Anchorage Pioneer Home,

Edna was born May 23, 1926 to James C. and Mina Beare in Lurton, Arkansas. Moving to California in the 1930's-she grew up to work in the shipyards during WWII.

Always looking for an adventure, she moved to Fairbanks in 1949. There she eventually married, had her two daughters, Vera & Debra, and went into business with her husband, Gale and their business partner, Lew Kinda. They owned and operated the Cottage Bar until moving to Anchorage, after the '64 Quake. Edna and Gale then owned and operated the Westerner Bar on 4th Avenue and later the Western Lounge on Fireweed/ C Street until his death (1976) & Edna's retirement in the 80's.

Continuing her love for adventure, she traveled extensively, with her sister, Wanda, taking many cruises & exploring many new and exciting places.

Edna lived several winters with her sister lakeside in Clearlake Oaks, California, but the call of the Chugach's was too much and she returned to Alaska for good in 1992. She would say she loved those mountains', always having a view out her front door and out her window at the Pioneer Home.

To continue the adventure, she leaves behind her daughters, Vera Delong and Deb Greeson; grandson, Brian Delong and his partner, Sarah Erickson; granddaughter, Denise Litirvenn, her husband, Chris and their daughter(the Great-Grandchild), Lwaxana Litirvenn; beloved sister, Wanda Fulford and her son, Ron Regnier; nephew, Robert Frolich; sister, Mary Smith and many friends, and loved ones scattered around the country and the world.

The family would like to thank the Anchorage Pioneer Home and especially Dianne of Providence Hospice for taking care of Edna.

Always one for a party, a Celebration of Life will be held from 2-5 p.m. January 25, 2014 at the Fraternal Order of the Eagles Aerie 4207, 2020 Dowling Road. Please come and share a story and have final toast to a Grand Lady!

Goodbye Grandma- thank you for the time you got to spend with Lwaxana. Watching you make her giggle and smile made my day. The look on her face when you slyly put a French fry in her mouth is my favorite. I'm glad you got to meet her. :)

To a truly Great Lady. Longtime friend and mother figure to many. Thanks for touching all our lives and hearts. Loved your laughter and stories, especially the one about you, Yvonne, a sack of quarters and the piano at the Chicaco Bar!!!
You will be missed by many.
Love you.

I called Edna Jewels because she always had on her lovely matching jewelry and looked pretty. She was a very fun and cool lady and she will be very missed.

I grew up with her daughter Deb, lucky to know Edna. She was larger than life and a pleasure to have known. These are the kind of folks who built Alaska and were ambasadors of Alaska. Edna will be well remembered by the many whose lives she touched, we will all miss her.
