Frederick Kraun Obituary

Frederick "Fred" Julius Kraun, 78, of Issaquah, Wash., died June 5, 2007, at home.
Fred was born Feb. 4, 1929, in Naknek, to Frederick and Nina Kraun. He was raised in Naknek, where he attended local schools. Fred was introduced to commercial fishing at a young age when he began net fishing off the beach with his mother. He later fished on sailboats, then power boats.
Fred served in the Korean War as part of the K-9 Corps in 1951 and 1952.
After the war, he returned to Alaska, and in 1954 he went to work for Alaska Airlines, flying Bush routes out of Nome. There he met and married his wife of 51 years, Peggy. In 1956, he transferred to the main line with Alaska Airlines and moved from Nome to Anchorage. In 1967, he was transferred from Anchorage to the Seattle area. He retired in March 1988. The family had lived in Issaquah, Wash., since 1967.
His family wrote: "A loving husband, father, and grandfather, Fred enjoyed spending time with his family, summers in Alaska, commercial fishing in Naknek, and flying in his Cherokee 180. A dedicated employee and an accomplished pilot, Fred always looked forward to another day at work. Another passion Fred shared with his wife was their yearly trips to Hawaii to attend the Oktoberfest. He, his wife and friends loved to dance the polka and all the other old-time dances played by a band of musician friends."
Survivors include his loving wife, Peggy, of Issaquah; sons, Gary Kraun of Renton, Wash., and Fred M. Kraun of Fall City, Wash.; daughter, Debbie Kraun of Issaquah; six grandchildren; brother, Clarence Kraun of Naknek; sisters, Lina Kraun of Anchorage and Alice Peterson of Wasilla; and many extended family members and friends.

How well I remember Fred flying for Alaska in Nome and when he and Peggy were married. He was always the perfect gentleman, dedicated to his wife and family. Haven't seen Fred and Peggy since the 1970s at a Nome Picnic at Woodland Park. Our thoughts are with you, Peggy and your family.
