George Reinert Obituary

George Reinert Jr., longtime Alaskan and 30-year veteran of the U.S. Marine Corps and U.S. Air Force, died Feb. 25, 2011.

A funeral service will be held at 1 p.m. Wednesday at Fort Richardson National Cemetery. Those wishing to attend should meet at the Fort Richardson main gate off the Glenn Highway no later than 12:40 p.m.

Born in Allentown, Penn., on Oct. 2, 1925, George joined the Marines as a teenager and fought in the South Pacific during World War II. He then joined the USAF and served for nearly 27 years, working in the Fire Department in all capacities, from firefighter to inspector to fire chief. Following his Air Force service, he continued as a fireman, working as a civilian on Fort Richardson as an inspector and fire chief.

His family wrote: "All who knew him will miss the twinkle in his eye and his easy laughter. He will be best remembered for his abundant, loving devotion to his family and his eager readiness to help others. He is profoundly missed by his wife of 57 years, Vivian, and by his son, Raymond, 53."

George was a wonderful part of the Elmendorf Traditional Service for many years. He was a faithful member, serving as an usher, and as the one who brought the donuts each week for our fellowship. His infectious laughter and his love of music and his son were great things. He walks with the angels now, hearing more of that beautiful music. You will be missed.

I had the pleasure of working with George as his Caregiver and he was a joy and pleasure to work with and enjoyed his company and his stories about his life. I never met Vivian but can tell by the phone calls how much he loved her, and now got to finally meet his son Raymond, and the love he had for his son too. God Speed and may you have peace now, I thank the family for the kindness you showed me. Teresa Sellards Anchorage.
