Harding Ewan Obituary

Beloved husband, father, grandfather, uncle and Copper Center resident Harding Frank Ewan, 73, died March 31, 2010, at Alaska Native Medical Center.

Family wrote that he "went to be with the Lord."

A visitation will be at 1 p.m. today in Anchorage at the Wayland Baptist University Church, 7801 E. 32nd Ave., off Muldoon Road. A service will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at the Glennallen Chapel. Burial and potlatch will follow in Copper Center.

Harding was born March 13, 1937, at Ewan Lake.

A hard worker all his life, Harding retired from Local 302 and the State of Alaska Department of Transportation. Harding also worked for the FAA. Harding was a lifelong subsistence hunter and fisherman. He advocated for Alaska Native subsistence rights up until he was too ill to attend meetings. A former dog musher, Harding loved dog mushing and he enjoyed going to dog races. Harding was a member of the Gulkana Village and Ahtna Inc. He was also a member of the Alaska Native Brotherhood, Camp 31.

In retirement, Harding enjoyed being with his family, working on his fish wheel, and playing cards. Harding was looking forward to this summer and spending time at his new fish wheel site.

His family wrote: "Harding's smile and loving heart were an inspiration to his family and friends. He always spoke with kindness and respect. He taught all of us to be the same way."

He is survived by his wife, Donna Ewan; daughters, Corettalynn Stevens, Serena Stevens, Reina Ewan, Rene Ewan, Cheyenne Ewan, and Corie Ewan; sons, Jeremy Stevens, Eric Stevens, Gerald L. Stevens Jr., and Rodney B. Stevens. Harding was a proud grandfather to grandsons Josiah Stevens, Gabriel Stevens, and Herman T.J. I thank all of you for your kind comments. My husband was a wonderful man who loved all people regardless of race. He raised two families and gave them the best. He loved his girls, they were his world. He alway cherished them and was proud to be a real daddy he called it. He had his own at last. I am glad for all the years we had together and i will miss him dearly. This man had two retirements in his life and was a hard worker. He alway worked down fishwheel and kept busy. He believed in sobriety. He said people should alway keep busy with their hands and not drink. Live today as your last day. He loved all his friends. I thank god for all of you. Thank you for helping me when we needed help. God bless you all.

My prayers go out to you Donna and girls. It's wonderful that you gave him his last years of happiness and his very own family to love. As a child and growing up, I remember Harding as always a kind man and treated everyone with respect and always asked about Dad and visited him. My Dad always liked Harding and feels very sad about his passing.

My thoughts and prays are with all of you in your time of grief. Every time I saw Mr Ewan he always remembered me as Dougs daugther, and reminded me of what a good man he was. That was always special to me as I was only 17 when I lost my father and after all these yrs he was remembered. I thank you all for his kindness.
