Harry Shawback Obituary

Harry A. Shawback, 87, died March 29, 2009, at Taylored Cozy Care Assisted Living Home in Anchorage.
Visitation will be from 5-6 p.m., with a service at 6 p.m. today at Kehl's Legacy Funeral Home, 11621 Old Seward Highway. Another service will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at Dan O'Hara's Community Bible Church. Burial will follow at Naknek Cemetery.
Harry was born July 18, 1921, in Blooming Prairie, Minn. He was one of eight children. He served in World War II as an airplane mechanic. He was honorably discharged.
"In 1950, he flew a Stinson Aircraft for Babe Alsworth from Minnesota to Port Alsworth," his family recalled. "From there, he flew to the Lake Iliamna area, where he met his wonderful wife of 44 years, Mary "Drew" Shawback. They moved to Naknek in 1951 and started a family. Mary went to be with the Lord on Nov. 11, 2007.
"Harry had a very entrepreneurial spirit. He was highly instrumental in forming Naknek Electric Association and served as manager. He further established Bristol Bay Contractors in King Salmon in 1961. The company is now owned by his son, Lynn Shawback.
"He was also magistrate for the Territory of Alaska, and served under the Hammond administration through the state of Alaska for two terms. Harry also served as deputy commissioner for the Department of Transportation.
"Harry was at peace with the Lord when he passed, from death unto eternal life."
Harry is survived by his four children, Lynn Shawback, La Verne Pettigen and spouse Van Pettigen, Harry Shawback Jr., Mary Ann Jones and spouse Steven Jones. He is also survived by his siblings, Don Shawback, Donna Cameron, Ellen Gibson and Ilene Santos. Harry left 12 grandchildren: Aron, Bridget, Teresa, Chris, Leigha, La Tisha, Carl, Robert, Matthew, Dina, Deborah and Sarah; and nine great-grandchildren, Evan, Erin, Haley, Jaden, Elise, Easton, Jaxson, Zachary and Kylen.
Memorial contributions may be made in his honor to the Alzheimer's Resource of Alaska, 1750 Abbott Road, Anchorage, AK 99507.
Arrangements are with Kehl's Legacy Funeral Home and Crematory.

I remember loading up in the car with Grandma and going to see Grandpa at the "office by the airport"...playing with him in the pool in Hawaii all day long...taking his boots off everyday as little girl and how he would wiggle his toes and then have me take his socks off...he "taught" me how to do it, by pulling the socks from top instead of from the toes!!! I will always remember him with love.

I have been doing business with Harry since 1954, when he rebuilt my first plane at his hangar on Northwestern Lake. He & Mary let me stay at their home. He was always such an honest and reputable businessman, and will be remembered.
