Henry Shade Obituary

Lifelong Alaska Native Henry E. Shade, 79, died March 28, 2009, at Alaska Native Medical Center.
A service will be at 6 p.m. today at Evergreen Memorial.
Henry was born Aug. 11, 1929, in Clarks Point. He moved to Dillingham, where he lived the rest of his life. He was a scow captain at the age of 14. He served in the Territorial Guard at a young age.
He loved trapping, hunting, flying, camping, boating, women and beer (not necessarily in that order). He also loved telling stories of his adventures in his youth. He enjoyed his work building water and sewer systems around Bristol Bay and helping people.
Henry was a loving father, grandpa and uncle who will be deeply missed by family and friends. However, he will not be forgotten.
His children, Henry, Van, Gail, Roxanne, Eric, Annette, Tracy, Kenny and Terry; and many grandchildren and great-grandchildren survive him.
His parents, Henry Sr. and Mary; and brothers, Harvey, Herman; sisters, Dolly, Doris; and daughters, Joyce and Wendy, preceded Henry in death.

Henry was a great teacher and mentor. At one time he brought me to a RMW training class to learn about the importance of small communities having running water. The bottom line was maintaining public health. Thanks to Henry's dedication to water and wastwater industry many people are healthy and have lived longer having the water of life. I will miss Henry's experties and advice.

Henry was a great guy. He will be remembered for his love of life, women, a good soak in his hot tub, Miller Genuine Draft, and his great storytelling ability. I worked with Henry when he was an RMW for the Bristol Bay area communities. He provided exemplary service and went above and beyond the call of duty to help the local operators out. I'm going to miss you, Henry!

My condolences to the Shade family. I worked with Henry for nine years as we traveled throughout the Bristol Bay region helping communities maintain their water and sewer systems. Henry was known, welcomed and appreciated throughout the region. He contributed a tremendous amount in keeping clean water piped to the homes of the village residents and maintaining the critical community infrastructure resulting in the protection of the health of Bristol Bay residents. At the same time, he mentored and trained a bunch of young Public Health Service Officers who are all better at their jobs today because of Henry.

Thanks Henry. We will miss you!
