James Spencer Obituary

James Arthur Spencer, 81, died Sept. 2, 2007, at South Peninsula Hospital in Homer.
A service will be at noon Saturday at Glacierview Baptist Church, 960 East Road in Homer. The Rev. Rick Wise will officiate.
Jim Spencer was born March 15, 1926, to James and Edna Spencer in Dayton, Ky. He grew up along the Ohio River. He worked for the railroad at the age of 16 until he joined the U.S. submarines for the duration of World War II.
After the war, he was trained in electronics and came to Alaska to work on the White Alice communications project. In 1957, he was stationed at Tin City, where he met Dolly Mendenhall, his wife of 48 years. While working for White Alice, which eventually became Alascom, he lived in Fairbanks and Glennallen and then in 1970 he transferred to Homer. He retired in 1986 and began to travel to Florida, Alabama and Arizona, where he and Dolly made numerous friends.
He loved tinkering with electronics and repairing electrical equipment.
His family wrote: "All his friends and family enjoyed listening to him tell of his many adventures about the railroad, World War II, fishing, and many other Alaska adventures. He leaves us with many fond memories, but we know he is happy to join his wife in heaven to be with their Savior the Lord Jesus Christ."
He is survived by his brother, Doug Spencer of Dayton, Ky.; sister in-law, Linda Spencer of Cincinnati; son and daughter-in-law, Perry and Nancy Mendenhall of Nome; daughters and son-in-law, Terry Ann Plummer of Covington, Ky., Linda Kline of Soldotna, and Virginia and Nathan Wise of Homer; sons and daughter-in-law, Victor and Debbie Spencer of Clearlake, Texas, and James A. Spencer III of Homer; 10 grandchildren; and numerous great- and great-great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his siblings, Michael Spencer, David Spencer, Norma Zile and Virginia Kendrick, and his wife, Dolly Spencer.

I will miss my Uncle. I have not seen him in several years since I live in North Carolina. I always enjoyed the visits he and Dolly made to Kentucky and the Tater Ridge farm. He and Dolly will be together now.
