James Watkins, Jr. passed away peacefully on Wednesday, September 16, 2015 at his home in Houston, Texas.
He was a native of New Orleans, Louisiana and a resident of Houston, TX. James attended Orleans Parish Public Schools and was a graduate of Booker T. Washington Sr. High (1970) and Xavier University (1977). He worked as a music instructor with the Orleans Parish School Board shaping the lives of students at James Derham Middle School, F.W. Gregory Junior High, and John McDonogh, Sr. High. Beloved son of the late Mary Joseph Ellis and James Watkins, Sr.
Loving husband and best friend of Edith Lorraine Watkins of 43 years of marriage; father of James (Kelly) Watkins, III, grandfather of Kevin-James and Ian-Bailey Watkins,; brother of Odeal Williams, Leola Howard and the late Wilbert Thomas, and Willie and Bertha Ellis; son-in-law of Hazel Stewart and the late Leroy Stewart; brother-in-law of Bobbie Jean Smith, Jeanette (LT) Jenkins, Michael (Jacqueline) Stewart and the late Grace Green, Irea Green, Chauncey Williams and Malcolm Smith; Also survived by a host of nieces, nephews and extended family, many friends, and colleagues.
Relatives and Friends of the Family also Pastors, Officers and Members of Christian Unity Baptist Church, Metropolitan M.B.C., New Light Christian Center Church of Houston, TX. and NOPS, also former colleagues and students are all invited to attend the Funeral Service on Friday, September 25, 2015 for 10 A.M. at Christian Unity Baptist Church, 1700 Conti Street, NOLA. Visitation will begin at 9:00 A.M. Rev. Dwight Webster, Officiating. Interment will follow at Mount Olivet Cemetery.

I have known Mr. James Watkins since college days at Xavier University. He was a bundle of energy then and even when he started to teach in the Orleans Parish school system, it DID NOT change. It was almost like a nervous energy with him: he ALWAYS wanted to do something and ALWAYS wanted to do it WELL. He was outspoken and had a GREAT sense of humor, but...he was SERIOUS about what he embarked on. My prayers go out to the family. I know you will miss him. He was ALSO quite a musician.
