Marilyn Williams Obituary

Marilyn Bolanz Williams was a courageous woman of keen intellect who lived life with passion and vivacity.

Marilyn came to Alaska in the early 1950s, as she wanted to experience the last frontier. That is also where she met her husband Bill Williams, another fellow adventurer and a Tlingit Indian. His family paid her the highest honor when they adopted her into a clan and gave her a Tlingit name.

She and her husband were active in politics. They were also both members of the Alaska Native Brotherhood and the Alaska Native Sisterhood, where she recently served as historian. At the same time, they both built a unique life where they raised five children in the Anchorage area.

Marilyn and her husband Bill were employed at the Alaska Native Medical Center for almost 30 years.

Marilyn loved to cook, to write, to garden and to travel. She learned fluent Spanish and wrote several books, one of them about the history of Tlingit totems. She was a longtime member of the Buddhist group Tromge Ling where she found a strong sense of community as well as spiritual meaning.

Marilyn, her family wrote, was a true citizen of the world and believed in social justice.

She was preceded in death by her husband Bill Williams, and is survived by her daughter Anna and son-in-law Nick, her daughters Maria Williams and Gloria Williams, daughter Carmen and son-in-law Chris Bydalek, her son Frank Williams of Arizona, her sister Gloria of Florida, and her granddaughter Sabrina, and numerous nieces and nephews. A Celebration of Life will be held on Saturday at St. Mary's Episcopal Church on Tudor and Lake Otis from 2-4 p.m.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be sent to Tromge Ling Buddhist Center 1001 East Fireweed Lane, Anchorage, AK 99508, or The Boomer Esiason Foundation (http://esiason.org).

This picture was taken in July 1998 when Marilyn and I took an excursion together to Guyaquil, Ecuador. She always had an easy smile on her radiant face. I admired her adventurous nature; she was always interested in people and curious to learn more about other cultures. Ruhe in Frieden, Freundin!

I met Marilyn in Ecuador in the late 90s in a language school in Quito. She was 74 and I 28, but let me tell you she was an absolute powerhouse. She danced Salsa after the regular Spanish classes as if there was no tomorrow. She didn't break a sweat. Her zest of life was inspiring. She did not mince her words, she was hilarious. We went on two extended weekend trips together, to Cuenca and Guayaquil. Those trips were something to make a film of, such an adventure, filled with drama and thrill. I have so many pictures of her. Maybe her family want to have them. Marilyn and I stayed in contact for years after. And then silence. I went on google to find her book she told me about. I only remember it had something to to with snakes...that's when I stumbled over her obituary. You had a long life and still I feel tears slide down my face. I truly believed, yiu would live forever! Marilyn, thank you for the absolute privilege to meet you and spend time in your orbit. You were a light figure to me and you always will be. I love you!

I remember reading Marilyn's book about the TB epidemic and the sorrow it brought to families in Alaska. She and Dr. Mills were the ones who taught me wound care in Alaska. She was the best mentor,as a Physical Therapist that anyone could have. I will never forget her red hair, her humor, and her compassion, and her willingness to be a lifetime learner. I will miss her smile always. My deep condolences to her family.
