Mary Dugan Obituary

Long time Anchorage resident Mary Margaret Dugan died at her home in Anchorage, Alaska, on April 29, 2016. She was surrounded by family members at her death. A service will be held on Friday, May 6, 2016, at 3:30 p.m., at Our Lady of Guadalupe Parish, 3900 Wisconsin Street in Anchorage. Her brother, Father Gene Delmore, will officiate. The reception will shortly follow the service at the IBEW, 3333 Denali Street, Ste 200, Anchorage, AK 99503. Mary Dugan was born on March 25, 1940, in Billings, Mont. She graduated from Fratt Memorial Elementary School in Billings and from Holy Names Academy High School in Seattle, Wash. She moved to Anchorage in November 1967 and has lived there ever since. She worked for the Anchorage Telephone Utility from 1980 until her retirement in 2002. She also worked for Catholic Social Services and the Food Bank of Alaska. Mary loved to read and learn and loved stimulating conversation. She had a great sense of humor as well as a deep sense of spirituality. "Mary desired to be a saint and to me she was one," her family wrote. Her motto was: "Live in the present with joy and enthusiasm; each day is a gift." Many of the children's friends commented "her voice brought me so much peace." One dear friend said, "Mary seemed to be the most perfect Mom to have, great memories of getting yummy snacks and warm smiles and encouragement and to be safe in Turnagain dance in my head." She is survived by her children, Joe Dugan, Peggy Dugan, Kathy Dugan and Michael Dugan. A daughter, Teresa Dugan, preceded her in death. She is also survived by three grandchildren, Abby Haugstad, Cole Haugstad and Jolea Dugan; and brothers and sisters, Gene Delmore, Kay Delmore Nicklaus, Louise Delmore, Cissy McLane, Joe Delmore, Ned Delmore, Ann Delmore, Jane Gibler, Steve Delmore and Tom Delmore. The family requests that, in lieu of flowers, memorial donations can be made to Abused Women's Aid in Crisis or the American Cancer Society. Interment (the placing of the ashes) will be at Anchorage Memorial Park Cemetery, 535 East 9th Avenue.

I have fond memories of Mary from when I was a kid. She was always so nice to me, I would make projects in school and she would always display them in her home. Her home always felt so warm and welcoming. I tried to connect with her a few years ago and sad to see she passed away. Warms my heart to know she´s with her daughter Teresa, who was like a second mother to me. Would love to connect with the family if they see this 253-353-0827. RIP Mary

My heart is heavy and my eyes are filled. Who could forget the inner beauty, lively sense of humor, adventurous and kind lady she was. She was always a lady, and a very special lady to us. I can hear her laugh and see her smile that smile that could light up a room, as both are embedded in my mind. I will forever remember the kindness and love she gave me and I will pray that you can all be comforted in your warm memories and know that you do not grieve alone. My love to you all, Mary Hiukka Judd

To Mary's family, I'm so sorry for your loss. I remember as a teenager how she treated me and all the other friends of her kids and that was with the utmost respect and love! She was one of the mothers I had so much respect for!

Dear Dugan Family,
I worked with Mary at ATU for many years. She was such a sweet soul. She had a smile for everyone she came in touch with. She truly was a generous person and never hesitated to be there for anyone who needed an extra hand or a kind word. She will be missed. We will all be together again.

I worked with Mary at ATU, she was loved and respected by her coworkers. Mary always had a kind word, a shoulder when needed, and a ready smile. She's a great loss, we need people like her in the world.

Growing up, our families knew each other...she was great friends with my mom. I will always remember her warm smile and caring voice. I am certain that she and my mom are sitting in Heaven sharing stories, laughter and watching over their children from above.

I worked with Mary at ATU and don't need a picture to remember the smile and caring expression on her face. The many people that had the privilege to work with Mary at ATU are lucky. She is as close to a Saint as they come!
