Niles Cesar Obituary

Niles C. Cesar, 70 passed away peacefully at home in Anchorage, surrounded by his family and friends after a long illness.

Born May 29, 1941 at St. Ann's Hospital in Juneau to Santiago and Mary Cesar, he attended St Ann's parochial school and Juneau Douglas High School. Niles graduated Summa Cum Laude from the Tidewater Community College. He received his Bachelor of Science in Environmental Health from George Washington University.

Niles enlisted in the U.S. Navy and was commissioned as an officer, including active duty on the USS Midway. Following twenty years of service, Niles returned to Juneau and continued to devote his skills to achieving the provision of first-rate healthcare services to Southeast Alaska Natives, working with SEARHC.

Niles went on to become the Regional Director for Alaska with the Bureau of Indian Affairs. Throughout twenty years in the position, Niles worked to maximize the services and benefits provided to Alaska Natives, including establishing the BIA Providers Conference. Niles was particularly proud of his many years of advocacy as a member of the Federal Subsistence Board in Alaska.

Niles was a Tribal member of Tlingit and Haida, a shareholder and previous board member of Sealaska and Goldbelt Inc. Known by his Tlingit name, Sxayadheich, he was a member of the Lukaax Adi Sockeye Raven (Yeil Hit) House of Haines. Niles was also a proud member of the Filipino community.

Niles was preceded in death by his parents, Santiago and Mary, sisters Amelia and Marilyn, brother Michael and grand-nephew D.J.

Niles is survived by his loving wife, Florence Carroll; daughters Jennifer Cesar (Padraig) and Amelia Kendrick (Ben); stepchildren Carrie McMillan (Paul), Kyle McMillan, Jennifer Waters (Tom); brothers Kermit (Andrea), Del (Marlene) and Kenneth (Jackie); brother-in-laws Ted Wieting and Ray McClure; grandsons Joshua Thorene and Benjamin Niles Kendrick; grand-daughter Madison Kendrick; great grand-daughter Jamie Thorene. He will be missed tremendously by the many he touched, and would want us to keep "Living the dream".

A memorial service will be held at St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Catholic Parish (2901 Huffman Road) 1 pm Saturday March 24, 2012. A reception will follow at O'Malley's on the Green (3651 O'Malley Road). A second memorial will be held in Juneau at a later date.

Niles was a major contributor to the improvement of health care throughout Alaska. He was a tireless worker who truly cared about his responsibilities and about people. He was a good Alaskan and an important part of the Juneau community.

March 27, 2012

I first met Niles in the fall of 1954 when we both entered JDHS as freshmen. For the years I lived in Juneau we were very good friends. We got together a few times over the next 10 years then lost contact. I am very happy to see that Niles lived a successful and productive life. Our high school teachers did not hold out much hope for either of us. My son was named after Niles. My condolences to his family.

My prayers are for Niles and his family ...I am very sorry for your loss. Your loss is our loss too since my family has been friends with the Cesars for many years in Juneau.

I just learned that Niles started the BIA Providers Conference that my coworkers and I attend each year. It is a wonderful conference where we meet to get updates on the programs we offer to our tribal citizens, and it's when we encourage each other in the work we do.

What a visionary man Niles was! I truly appreciate his work and the many contributions he made to our Native community.

May God bless you and keep you.
