Ollen Hunt Obituary
Ollen Hunt was born in McLemoresville, Tennessee on July 25, 1923 to Sant Hunt and Mattie Virginia Hunt. Ollen took to heart the guidance of his parents who instilled in him a strong, kind, and loving character.
Ollen was drafted into the U.S. Army November 22, 1942. His outfit was the 92nd Infantry Division, E Company, 370th Regiment. The "The Buffalo Division" traced its lineage to the famed African-American Buffalo Soldiers of the post Civil War era.
After the war, Ollen returned home for a short period before returning to assignments in post-war Italy, England, France and Germany. While in Nuremberg, Ollen met Hannelore Geyer. They were married a few years later and remained married 59 years.
Ollen continued his military service and retired at Ft. Lewis in 1963. In 1964, Ollen was accepted for a position with Northwest Orient Airlines as a flight kitchen chef in Anchorage Alaska, arriving in time for the Good Friday earthquake.
Ollen worked in and later purchased the Hof Brau restaurant, the Sandwich Deck and the Before and After Shop. During the "Hof Brau years," Ollen served on downtown merchant and municipal committees and councils, and received awards for his civic contributions.
After this second "retirement," Ollen wrote "Buffalo Soldier: What I Did for My Country, What My Country Did for Me." Proud of this accomplishment, Ollen promoted his book at many book-signings, community events, and in television and print media.
Ollen Hunt was a hardworking man who was always ready to shake a hand, talk to friends and strangers, and help others. He will be greatly missed by all those who knew him.
Ollen is survived by his wife, Hannelore Eva Hunt; daughter, Katherine Rita; granddaughters, Ariel Ericka and Taylar Halee; son, Ollen Erich; and daughter-in-law, Karen Lovaas.
A memorial service will be held on Tuesday, March 18, 2014 at the Soldier's Chapel on JBER Ft. Richardson at 1:30 p.m., with burial services conducted at 3:00 p.m. Arrangements have been entrusted to Legacy Funeral Homes Bragaw Chapel.
In lieu of flowers the Hunt family requests that donations be made in Ollen Hunt's name to any Veteran's charity organization such as Wounded Warriors, local charities such as Covenant House, or other charities that enhance the lives of the citizens of the city Ollen loved so dearly.

I know my mother loved you and your beautiful wife and I remember those days when you both worked at Northwest. I often think about those days with Eric and Kathy when we were young. My sincere condolences to the Hunt family. Katherine I have fond memories of shopping in downtown Anchorage in the early years and always ending up at the Hof Brau restaurant where your dad always greeted us with a smile!

As a young kid I worked with Ollen at the Northwest kitchen at the airport. What a great boss he was! Later when he operated the Hof Brau I would come and visit him as well as eat his delicious food. I last saw him at Fred Meyer's where we exchanged old times and some laughs. I bought his most recent book he had for sale. He always got the biggest kick out of me watching me go from a kid into a grown man. I made him laugh a lot with my crazy antics! He was one of the most decent men I ever have known. I will miss you Ollen and yes I did sneak some brownies out of the cooler 47 years ago! To all his family, God bless you.

Ollen Hunt is a person who was loved and admired by many. His family will miss him but fortunately they have many fond memories of this wonderful man, I know a couple of my children will think of him every time they pull in a fish. Thanks for the memories Ollen,my best to your family.

I did not know Mr. Hunt, but I did have the honor and privilage to meet him,and talk with him for a short time at the American Legion Post#1 in Anchorage. Buffallo Soldiers was a very uplifting and inspirational book. Mr Hunt was a true American hero, a gentleman and an inspiration for us all.Mr.Hunt will not be forgotten.I thank him for his service and thank his family for sharing Mr.Hunt with us all. Rest in Peace.

I met Mr. Huntwhen I moved to Alaska in 1991. I never met a finer gentleman in my life. My talks were so dear to me and especially when I asked him to autograph a copy of his book for my son. Even though I have moved from Alaska, I never forgot the talks we had. I will truly miss you my brother in arms. I have the memories and your smile will never fade from my mind. Ollen Hunt was one of the finest men that I have met in Alaska. I always looked forward to seeing him at the Christmas Book Fair at the Museum and we'd always have a good chat.

I will always remember Mr. Hunt as the coach of my little league baseball team in 1967 when we won first place. My folks new him through patronage of the Hof Brau. A kinder more compassionate man you would never meet. RIP Mr. Hunt, you will always be remembered.

Ollen will be missed by all that knew him. He went into the service Nov 22 1942 and I was born Nov 21 1942. I have had dealing with him over the past 19 years at luncheons and his visits to The Odom Corporation
