Ramona Sines Obituary

Ramona Faye Bell Sines, 68, a devoted wife, mother and grandmother, died Dec. 28, 2010, in Escondido, Calif. Her death ended a lengthy battle with cancer. She is sorely missed by her family and friends.

She was born Oct. 26, 1942, in Dermott, Ark., to Robert and Mary Austin Bell. The Bell family moved to Alaska in 1945 and homesteaded in south Anchorage. The oldest daughter of eight children, Ramona assisted in the family home and businesses during her adolescence. With the mentoring of her stepfather, Daryl Haines, she graduated from Anchorage High School and then put herself through Alaska Methodist University, where she received her Bachelor of Arts degree in 1964.

Ramona married Paul Sines in 1964. Together they raised three children and built a house on the lower Hillside and a cabin on Big Lake. For the first 14 years of their marriage, Ramona was a stay-at-home wife and mother. She led Girl Scout and Cub Scout troops, umpired Little League games, and shuttled kids to soccer, baseball and softball practices, piano lessons, and orchestra rehearsals. She taught fencing at Rabbit Creek Community School and volunteered to help troubled mothers. She enjoyed camping, road trips, cross-country skiing, spending time at the cabin, travel, and golf.

In 1978, Ramona went to work for Schlumberger. During her career, she was able to travel to Schlumberger sites in the U.S. and Europe. She advanced in the Anchorage office, retiring in 2000 as a geophysicist and department manager.

Ramona is survived by her husband, Paul Sines, of Anchorage and San Marcos, Calif.; children, Karen Sines Davies of Vista, Calif., Guy Sines of Anchorage, and Grant Sines of San Marcos; stepson, Dana "Tai" Sines of Woodland Hills, Calif.; sisters, Mary Bell of Kapaa, Kauai, Hawaii and Byra Haines Ford of Kapaa, Kauai, Hawaii; and grandchildren, Allison Davies, Mason Sines, Carolynn Davies, and Konner Rose.

A memorial service will be held in Anchorage in the late spring or early summer.

Not sure what to say?

January 25, 2011

Dear Paul, Karen, Guy, and Grant,
I am so sorry to hear of your loss ... and the loss of all those who loved Ramona. She will truly be missed. I have such wonderful memories. She and I used to have water fights in Rabbit Creek when the kids were small. I think I always got the worst of it. We made Sauerkraut in your attic with our large cabbage crop. It was the best tasting Sauerkraut ever. We spent time walking together. There are so many more memories and so little space to type. I will miss Ramona my friend. My biggest regret is that when the children got older we got busier and our time together was limited.

May our Father in Heaven give you the comfort to know that someday you will be together again.

Love, Mary (Western) Dittman Olympia, WA

Dear Paul and Family,
We were greatly saddened at the loss of Ramona. She was a special woman. Recently we were reminiscing about fun times at your Big Lake house ice fishing and enjoying the beauty and friendship there... and the Easter Ramona was with us in Sugar Land, TX, sitting out by our pool. What a strong and thoughtful person Ramona was.
Our thoughts are with you all,
Lynne and Rob North

Paul and family: We want you to know that we had a mini memorial for Ramona. We are Ramona's AHS classmates and her passing is such a sad occasion. However, we know that she is now free from pain and suffering and in the presence of Jesus. A poem was read and a prayer offered during our mini service; then, we let 6 orange and black balloons go up into the atmosphere in her honor. We will miss her at our next reunion organizing committee. From her classmates: Lois Brown Turinsky, Jane Williams Baldwin and Judy Mueller Jett.
