Richard Frost Obituary

Richard David Frost passed away suddenly September, 28, 2016 at the Alaska Native Medical Hospital. Richard was born in Kodiak Alaska at the Griffin Memorial Hospital on February 11, 1942. He was the baby of9 children born to Thomas J. and Susan Frost. Richard's Grandparents were Tichon and Anna (Knagin) Sheratine of Afognak Island. Richard completed Elementary, Junior High, and High School in the Kodiak Public Schools through 1959, and attended Washington State University through 1962 in Electrical Engineering with a minor in Mathematics. Of all the many recognitions he received, he was listed in Who's Who twice; once for High School Leaders of America, and later for Young Leaders of America. Richard served in the Alaska National Guard from November 1957 to November 1965. In 1974 Richard began work with the Alaska Area Native Health Service as Area Property and Supply Officer, then later as Director Awards and Administrative Services, and in 1984 as Area Executive Officer, which he retired from in 1994. Prior to Alaska Area Native Health Service, Richard worked for K and W Trucking as a Terminal Manager as well as Alaska Traffic Representative. He also worked with Alaska Steamship Co. as District Manager for the Kodiak/Aleutian and the Kuskokwim River districts. Earlier he worked at the Chiniak Air Force Tracking Site as a Supply Officer for Burtco and Emerald companies. Richard believed deeply in his Alaska Native culture and heritage. He is a shareholder of Koniag Inc. Regional Corporation and the village Afognak Native Corporation. He served as a member of the Board of Directors of Koniag, Inc. from 1984 to 1986 and then again in 1996 to 2016. He has held the Koniag Board offices of Vice President, Chairman of the Board, Treasurer and Secretary. Richard was the happiest when he was fishing in Homer and Seward. For the past 35 years Richard and Glenda attended the yearly Silver Salmon Derby in Seward. After the grandchildren were born they were regular campers in the R.V. and fishing on the boat for the entire derby. Another interest was traveling in the R.V. going from Anchorage to Nenana, Fairbanks, Seattle, Las Vegas, Texas, New Mexico, and Colorado many times. He had a real fondness for fixing or improving anything around the house. Glenda always called him the fiddler. He spent many happy hours with David and Lee, walking, biking on the trails, fishing, reading and traveling, just being an awesome grandpa. They called him,"POP". Richard was very generous with his time for his family. Richard so much wanted to personally retire from Koniag Board during the annual meeting in Seattle, October 1, 2016, so he could thank everyone for trusting in his leadership for so many years. Richards was preceded in death by his parents, Susan and Tom, by his siblings, Tommy Frost Jr., Joe Frost, Nick Frost, Mary Koenig, Kay Byerly, and Donna Reed. His surviving siblings are Bill Frost (Joan) & Bob Frost (Judy). Richard's family and loving wife Glenda Frost (Dernientieff) of 41 years and children Mary Lou, Michael (deceased) and Billy (Kelly), his 3 grandchildren David, Lee, Luke, special friends, Marie Barker, Paul Tannenbaum and many nieces, nephews, cousins, and a multitude of dear friends. A celebration of Life will be held at a later date.
