Sara Hornberger Obituary

Sara Ruth Hornberger stepped joyfully into heaven on Sept. 22, 2018, with family surrounding her. Sara was born on Aug. 22, 1929, to William and Ruth Caulkins in Peoria, Ill. She graduated from Bradley University with a Bachelor of Science in 1953. In 1955, Sara married Charles "Chuck" Hornberger and in 1963, the family moved to Naknek, Alaska, where Sara had obtained a teaching position and they purchased a business.
While in Naknek, Sara taught school, worked for their business and served as Magistrate for the 3rd Judicial District. In 1974, the family moved to Lake Clark, Alaska, where Sara was directly involved in forming the Lake and Peninsula School District. She served on the LPSD School Board from 1976 to 1987. Sara taught the first high school classes in Newhalen in the winter of 1975. After obtaining her M.Ed. in Public School Administration she served as Principal for LPSD in schools on the Alaska Peninsula. In 1991, she was honored as the State of Alaska Small Schools Principal of the Year. Sara also worked as a Park Historian for Lake Clark National Park.
Sara had many occupations, but first and foremost, she was a teacher who shared her love of learning and reading with everyone.
Sara was predeceased by her parents; brother, Thad; and granddaughter, Jennifer. She is survived by her husband, Charles; sister, Liz; her children, Linda (Mark), George (Funa) and Gayle; grandchildren, Sara, Jaslyn (Matt), Chester (Rachel), Olin (Jordan), Camber (Alec), Elora (Dylan) and Jeremy (Rene); and great-grandchildren, Joella, Benjamin, Sam, Peyton, Zach, Natalie, Mark, Roland and Max; as well as her very special "God-daughters," Beth and Allyson.
The family would like to thank everyone at the Pioneer Homes in Anchorage and Fairbanks, Alaska, for their kind care of Sara.
A memorial service will be held in Anchorage on Nov. 17, 2018, from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. at ChangePoint Church in Anchorage.
Condolences can be sent to Chuck at P.O. Box 81116, Fairbanks, AK 99708. Donations in Sara's name can be made to the Linda Johnson Memorial Scholarship, P.O. Box 498, King Salmon, AK 99613.

Chuck, Linda and family. Sara was a mentor and friend to me for over 30 years. I think you know that I loved and admired her a great deal. The way this obituary starts with the words about stepping joyfully into heaven is perfect. I know that is true and that must bring you all great comfort. Love and peace to you all.
