Shan Satterfield Obituary

Shan J. Satterfield CWO3 US Army age 32 died December 12, 2011 due to a helicopter accident in the line of duty. He was born May 18,1979 in Anchorage, Alaska son of Gary and Cynthia Satterfield.

He lived most of his life in Alaska and went to serve our country in the US Army in September 1997 where he served in such places as Korea, Iraq, Afghanistan, Kentucky and Washington, DC and was there during 9/11. He was currently stationed at Joint Base Lewis/McCord in Washington State.

A Memorial Service in honor of Shan will be held on Saturday, January 7, 2012 at 1:00 PM at First Presbyterian Church in Wasilla, Alaska with Pastor Henry Woodall officiating at the services. Graveside services with full Military Honors will be held on June 23, 2012 at 1:00 p.m. at Ft Richardson National Cemetery in Anchorage, Alaska.

Shan attended Dimond High School and graduated in 1997 when he enlisted in the US Army and received numerous awards while he was a SWAT sniper and then as a Pilot. He loved to fly and enjoyed the things he did with his family such as playing the keyboard and bass guitar; he played the tuba in the high school band and also enjoyed snowboarding and trying new things to have fun with his family and friends.

Shan will be remembered by his family as someone who had an awesome sense of humor and for his warm hugs and smiles. Shan thought the quote "The true soldier fights not because he hates what is in front of him, but because he loves what is behind him" which defined his choice of career nicely. He will be loved and missed always.

I was blessed to attend basic with Satterfield, later serving together in Korea. He was my friend, my Team Lead, and my Brother-In-Arms. I've tried many times to write this and more. I watched a nervous young man, walking off the airplane, transition to a Leader at Ft. McClellan, AL. While on the bus heading to basic, he spoke of his family, his father especially, as he wanted to fly one day, and how he dreaded his hair being shaved off. I am proud he followed his dream! I'm not sure if anyone will see this, but I would like to send some of the pictures I still have from basic. My condolences to his family!

I am sorry for your loss. May God give you all the strength you need to live each day without Shan. May his promised day of peace come soon when no one will have to die in the line of duty. (Isaiah 2:4) 4 And he will certainly render judgment among the nations and set matters straight respecting many peoples. And they will have to beat their swords into plowshares and their spears into pruning shears. Nation will not lift up sword against nation, neither will they learn war anymore.

To the Satterfield families. I grew up in the same neighborhood as Shan and remember him as always being a kind person & accepting to all. It saddens me greatly to hear of his passing. My heart & prayers are with your families during this time.

Dear Cindy and Gary
My heart goes out to you and Shan's family at this time of loss. Being a parent is tough but it's these times that test your strength. There is nothing I can say that will make things change, but I am here if you need anything and will keep you in my prayers.

To Sassa and family, I was so sorry to see of Shan's accident. I graduated with Shan, and while we were not friends, I remember him well as a kind and friendly person with a big heart. My heart goes out to your entire family as well as Shan's friends.
