Sharon Swope Obituary

Dr. Sharon W. Swope, world adventurer, intrepid traveler, dedicated educator, spiritual warrior and fierce friend, slid off this mortal coil on Jan. 16, 2015, laughing and enjoying the ride until the very end. Sharon died Friday at home in Fairbanks, Alaska, after a brief but epic battle with pancreatic cancer, surrounded in love by family and friends while celebrating a life well lived. Sharon was born in Ohio, for the Sulagi Nation in 1946, but was adopted and raised by her parents, Carl and Susan Roniger in rural Florida. She graduated from Fort Lauderdale High School in 1964, and attended the University of Florida, where she earned a bachelor's degree in 1969. Later, she earned her master's degree at the University of Illinois Springfield (formerly Sangamon State University), her education specialist degree at the University of Wyoming and her doctorate from Arizona State University. Sharon met her husband, Bob, while both were overachieving undergraduate students taking a graduate course in sociology. They began their Alaskan adventure together the summer before they married in 1969, carrying on a long-distance love affair over ham radio while Bob was working on Amchitka Island in the Aleutians. Bob and Sharon spent many years traveling throughout the "Lower 48" with their three children before moving to Fairbanks in 1992. Sharon worked as a psychologist, principal and school superintendent for multiple school districts throughout Alaska, including Anchorage, Nome, Kotzebue, Fairbanks, Yakutat and Dillingham. In 2008, Sharon retired from 30 years in public service. Sharon and Bob then moved their base camp to Colorado, to be closer to family. They returned home to Fairbanks shortly before her death. Sharon was known for working behind the scenes but not in the spotlight. She had an innate curiosity towards the unknown and believed whole-heartedly in the power of relationships. She was passionate about paying it forward to the next generation and living life to the fullest. Sharon believed actions of civility showed respect to others and thought, "meeting people where they are at," was the highest honor. Her life motto was, "live well, laugh often and love much." Throughout her life, Sharon traveled the globe, sampling fine foods, collecting funny stories and reveling in shared laughter with strangers. Whether it was trekking through the mountains of Southern New Zealand, shopping in the suqs of Northern Africa, sampling Swiss chocolates in the shadow of the Jungfraujoch, riding a mule train into the Grand Canyon, camping out with grandkids in Montana, roughing it in Banff National Park with her best girlfriends, watching the sunrise over the Grand Tetons or watching the sunset on a beach in Tonga, Sharon greeted each day as a joyous miracle. Sharon is survived by her husband of 45 years, the Rev. Robert L. Swope of Fairbanks, Alaska; her daughter, Jennifer and son-in-law, David and granddaughters, Mikaela and Julia Brenner of Tustin, Calif.; son, Jason Swope of Denver, Colo.; and granddaughters, Michele and Desiree Swope of Phoenix, Ariz.; daughter, Jillian Swope and son-in-law, Jack Fletcher and grandson, Jackson Fletcher, of Fairbanks, Alaska; and numerous family and friends from around the world. A Mass of the Resurrection will be held Saturday, Jan. 24, 2015, at 10:30 a.m. at Christ Lutheran Church, 1798 Iniakuk Ave. off Farmer's Loop Road in Fairbanks. All are welcome to attend. Per Sharon's wishes, please wear bright colors only to celebrate with laughter and love. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the University of Alaska Foundation to support the Rev. Bob and Dr. Sharon Swope Scholarship or to Hospice of Tanana Valley.

"To laugh often and much; to win the respect of intelligent people and the affection of children...to leave the world a better place...to know even one life has breathed easier because you have lived. This is to have succeeded."
- Ralph Waldo Emerson

Just saw this obituary. I had no idea and am grieving. Sharon and I worked together at Horace Mann Insurance Company in Springfield, IL, long ago when we were in our early-mid 20s. We became immediate friends. That was easy to do with Sharon. In many ways we grew into adulthood together although we were already married ladies. Our spouses became good friends too. Time and location changed over the years, but we touched base at least once every decade to catch up. I just did a search for Sharon today because our last contact was in 2008, right after their move to Colorado. The Emerson quote above was attached to her last email to me and seemed right to add here. She lived that quote. She was one of a kind and is dearly missed. Our love and condolences to Bob, Jennifer, Jason, and Jill. ~Lynn and John Baumgartner

Those we love don't go away,

They walk beside us every day,

Unseen, unheard, but always near,

Still loved, still missed and very dear.

Sharon was such an inspiration to me. I knew her from Yakutat, where I was a student and she was the Superintendent of Schools years ago...She graciously agreed to provided job references for me when I went out into the 'real world' and I have thought about her often throughout the years. I was extremely sad to read about her passing. It's been a long time since I've seen her, but I remember as if it was yesterday; she was bigger than life, fun, funny and radiating with good energy. My sincere condolences to her family.

Sharon and I were high school classmates and almost always together and usually in some kind of mischief. We were always giggling. I was so thrilled to reunite through email with her early last year after 50 years of lost time. I will always remember Sharon, my friend. Suzanne Wollman Huston, Versailles, Ohio

Bob and Family: Gloria and I were saddened to learn of the passing of a very special lady. We feel privileged to have known her while we were working together in southwestern Alaska. I will always remember that smile and her upbeat humor; she always left one feeling special. Thank you, too Bob for all the ways you showed our family the kindness you both had for each other and others. My prayers for you and your family.

So sorry to hear of Sharon's passing. My condolences to her family. I worked with her in Nome when she came to fill in as Interim Superintendent of Schools. I respected her highly, one of the finest that I have had the privilege of knowing.

Bob, my condolences on your loss. During my years as a classroom teacher I was blessed to teach for some excellent principals. Sharon was at the very top of that list. It was always clear that for Sharon kids were at the top of what was important. Knowing that and seeing that made it easy to follow her lead. It was a privilege and an honor to have taught for her. May the God of us all grant you and your family as much peace and comfort as He did joy in her years her on earth.

I had the pleasure of working with Sharon as a new special education teacher in Anchorage many years ago. She was an invaluable resource and sounding board professionally. I most remember her sense of humor, a valuable commodity in a challenging profession.

It was a privilege to have worked with and become friends with Sharon. Fierce was used in her obituary and no better word could have explained her. Except maybe passionate. Sharon is missed but not forgotten.

May the God of all comfort strengthen the entire family during this time of sorrow. Those who die God keeps in his memory because they are precious in his eyes. (Psalms 116:15). My sincerest sympathy.

It was a privilege and inspiration spending time with Sharon the all too brief time she was in Nome. What an outlook on life she had, and lived it to the fullest. My condolences to all who will miss her terribly.
