Clifford Stanbrough Obituary

Clifford "Red" Jerry Stanbrough, 84, peacefully went to be with the Lord on January 29, 2018. Cliff was born on April 9, 1933 in Hooker, Oklahoma to Creighton and Sylvia Stanbrough.

A gifted storyteller, Cliff loved to recount the more entertaining moments of his life and many adventures with family and friends. We were blessed to learn many valuable lessons from Cliff's, always shared through his wit and sense of humor. Among them, "If I embarrass you, tell your friends." Cliff, known for his curly red hair, at least in his younger years, earned the nickname "Red," putting his feisty Irish spirit to use livening up any room. Cliff never knew a stranger, and if you were one, you did not stay a stranger for long. Cliff was a force of nature, always with a joke on his lips and a ready laugh.

Cliff proudly enlisted in the United States Navy in lieu of marching or digging foxholes upon graduation from Alamogordo High School in 1952. Cliff was stationed in Corpus Christi, Texas; Norfolk, Virginia; and San Diego, California and enjoyed a worldwide cruise serving in the Korean Conflict aboard the USS Willard Keith DD-775. Upon completing four years of active duty service Clifford returned home to the Sacramento Mountains in New Mexico where he fell in love with Carrie Bell, the couple marrying in June of 1957. Cliff's gypsy blood led him and his family on many adventures with Lockheed-Martin from working at NASA in Houston, Texas to the top of Haleakala Crater in Maui, Hawaii and just about every western state in between. Cliff returned his family to Alamogordo in 1977 where he worked as the Forensic Photographer for the Department of Public Safety before retirement in 1998 which freed up his schedule to spend time at the Oleo Ranch, make music for the "old folks" at area nursing homes, and follow his grandchildren in their activities. Cliff was never one to shy away from bragging on his family, and could always be heard above the crowd as his grandchildren's loudest and proudest cheerleader. Cliff and Carrie have three children, were blessed with ten grandchildren and another seven grandchildren through marriage, and thirteen great-grandchildren.

Cliff is survived by his wife, Carrie; his eldest son, Lester and (Julie Stanbrough), daughter, Linda and (Dennis Turnbull), and youngest son, Lonnie and (Sheree Stanbrough), and his ten grandchildren and thirteen great-grandchildren who made Cliff's smile shine even brighter.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Creighton and Sylvia Stanbrough, and three siblings, his sister, Viola; and brother's, Harvey and William (Bill) Stanbrough.

A celebration of life memorial service for Clifford Jerry Stanbrough will be held at Bethel Baptist Church in Alamogordo, New Mexico on Saturday, February 3rd at 2:00 p.m. with Billy Tucker and Steve Fambrough officiating.

Should friends desire, contributions may be made to a charity of your choosing in honor of Cliff.

The Stanbrough family has entrusted their loved one to the care of Hamilton O'Dell Funeral Home to direct the funeral services.

Carrie and family,
My deepest condolences on your loss. I have such fond & beautiful memories of your family, and I will always cherish the way "Red" reached out to his friends from Texas and kept in touch. He always had a story and a kind word to say. You all encapsulate the meaning of the word, "love", and I pray for God to comfort you during this time. Love and Hugs!
