The Fighter Pilot

"Say what you will about him; arrogant, cocky, boisterous and a fun loving fool to boot - he has earned his place in the sun. So here's a "nickel on the grass" to you my friends, for your spirit, enthusiasm, sacrifice, and courage, but most of all for your friendship. Yours is a dying breed and when you are gone the world will be a lesser place."

Had the distinct privilege of being in initial pilot training with Don. He was our class commander. A tremendous leader and friend. Class 68-A, Craig AFB, Selma, AL. July 1966 - August 1967. RIP Sully. We will all rejoin you on our final flights west.

I can´t believe it´s been a year. I still think of him most every day, and wish I could have said good bye. All the trees for him and Rob have been planted. I hope they grow strong and straight in tribute. I hope you all are doing OK, or as well as can be expected. Have a happy holiday.

I must have signed his name hundreds of times on requisitions and reports. It was always Donald Sullivan Sullenberger. I never before saw Shields as his middle name.

I would really appreciate a note from you, Karen. I would have been at the memorial if it it had been possible. When I come home again, I will visit the cemetery and leave a memorial for him. I also plan to plant a tree. My sympathies and deepest condolences to Karen and Erik. My parents enjoyed getting to know Erik during the summer he spent with them up in the Smokey Mountains. RIP Sully. That man was gold.

I only just found out about Sully´s passing. You have all been on my mind since your note arrived Christmas before last, telling me you were in Katy. I am so sorry for your loss. I understand how heavy it is, as I feel its weight in my heart, too. He was the finest boss and man I ever had the pleasure of knowing and working for.
My sympathies to his sons and to Karen. With love, Elaine

I met The Colonel when I worked at Northshore Heights. He was a favorite of all there. We so missed him when he moved to Texas but rest assured he will never, ever be forgotten. It was a pleasure and an honor to know him.
