Karen Zachry Obituary
Karen Leigh (Overland) Zachry, was lifted to heaven by the angels on April 18, 2016. Karen was born to Arthur Eugene Overland and Ellen (Washington) Overland on August 17, 1949. She lived in many places as an Air Force BRAT, including Virginia, Nevada, Texas, and Germany.
On October 3, 1973, she married Bob Zachry in Reno, Nev. The pair met in Abilene, Texas, at the Southern Hills Club where Bob was playing music. Bob's cousin, Paul David, kept pestering her to dance so she finally decided to tell him she was with the lead singer of the band. Little did she know that Paul was Bob's cousin so of course he thought her ruse was hilarious. Who would think that a little white lie would lead her to the love of her life!?
Karen is survived by her loving husband of 42 years, Robert (Bob) Zachry; daughters Lisa Banister (Bryan) of La Luz, N.M., Kellie Zachry of Santa Fe, N.M., and her two grandsons, Zachry and Gene Banister. She is also survived by her brothers and sisters, Terry (Danielle) Overland, David Overland, Maureen Smith, and Donna (Scott) Shelton and Greg Overland.
Waiting for her in heaven were her mom and dad, beloved brother, Kevin Overland, and many other family and friends who are rejoicing being with her again.
Karen was a long time employee of Alamogordo Public Schools, beginning her career as a substitute teacher, then moving on to work at the Learning Resource Center, and finally as the Principal's Secretary at Academy Del Sol.
Visitation will be held on Thursday, April 21st from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m., at Alamogordo Funeral Home on First Street. Funeral Mass will be held on Friday, April 22nd at 10 a.m., at Our Lady of the Light Catholic Church in La Luz.
As an expression of sympathy, contributions are being accepted to fund a memorial scholarship in her name. All money donated to this fund will go toward college expenses of an Academy Del Sol student.
The Zachry family has entrusted their loved one to the care of Alamogordo Funeral Home to direct the services.

To all who knew and loved Karen, we are so sorry for your loss. We only knew her for a short while and our hearts are deeply saddened by the loss of her kind and gentle spirit. She was a sweet, classy, selfless lady. Her goodness will go on through the lives of those she helped while she was here.

Still expect to see Karen there when I go in the school. Her bulletin board is still there, full of about 15 years of memories of students whose lives she touched.

Bob, Maureen, Kellie, Lisa, dear Zachry, and precious little Gene - our hearts are aching for each of you. She loved you with all of her heart. She was a blessing to so many people and there are 'kids' from ADS who can thank Karen for helping them find their way. Holding all who love her in the Light. The blessing is she is with her mom and dad who I know she missed so much.
