Gloria Garcia Lopez
Alice - Mrs. Gloria Garcia Lopez of Alice, Texas passed away peacefully in her sleep on the morning of January 15th at her home. She was 95 years old.
Gloria was born on October 10, 1925, in Laredo, Texas to Dr. Jose Garcia and Tomasita Martinez Garcia. She was raised in San Diego, Texas, in a loving home that included her parents, her half-siblings from Tomasita's marriage to Fortunato Garcia - Raul Garcia, Estela Gutierrez, and Amada Rodriguez - and her half-brother, Eligio Garcia Canales, from Dr. Garcia's marriage to Maria Canales of Premont. Growing up, Gloria spent her summers in Monterrey, Mexico, and the Garcia family ranch near the Tacubaya Ranch in southern Brooks County. All her life, she fondly remembered horseback riding and spending time with her Garcia cousins at Tacubaya.
Dr. Garcia was one of few Mexican American doctors in South Texas in the early 1900s and Gloria was homeschooled by her father until the time that she attended San Diego High School, where she graduated as valedictorian of her class. In 1943, Gloria left San Diego to pursue her college degree at the University of Texas in Austin.
Gloria was a strong and popular student at UT and graduated Phi Beta Kappa in 1947 with a degree in French. She returned to South Texas where she taught at San Diego high school for 2 years. Hector left UT in 1945 to serve in the US Army in Japan. He returned to Texas, completed his law degree at Baylor Law School and settled in Alice, Texas in 1949 to begin his law practice. Back in South Texas, he and Gloria met again through mutual friends. They were married in 1950 in San Diego and then moved together to Alice to start their new life together.
Hector and Gloria were very happily married for 64 years. During that time, they worked side-by-side and successfully built their ranching business, GALO Land & Cattle, with ranches in Brooks, Duval, Jim Hogg, Jim Wells, Starr, and Zapata counties. Hector managed the business and legal affairs of the ranching business, while Gloria managed the financials. It was a true partnership and a labor of love for her to take care of ranches that had been in her family for generations.
Gloria is preceded in death by her parents; her beloved husband, Hector S. Lopez; her brothers Eligio Canales and Raul Garcia; and her sisters Estela Gutierrez and Amada Rodriguez. Gloria is survived by her nieces and nephews: Elsa Garcia, Raul Eduardo Garcia (Clara), Dora Garza, Dr. Jose Gutierrez (Sylvia), Edith Partin (John), Carlos Rodriguez (Janine), Homero Rodriguez (Carolyne), Gloria Iris Ybanez (Jesse); Brothers-in-law and sisters in-law: Francisco "Paco" Lopez, Jr., (Grace S.), Gloria L. Trevino, Emma L. Vidaurri, and Lucila L. Wing.

I remember Mr. & Mrs. Lopez, the nicest and kindness couple one could meet. I delivered the Caller-Times to them, first house on the route and best payer & tipper, who forgets that. The year 1960.
