Jose "Leandro" Martinez, age 84, passed away July 29, 2021. Jose Leandro Martinez was born February 10, 1937, in Tienditas, lived in Benavides, Corpus, and settled in Alice for the last 55 years.

He is preceded in death by his parents, Manuel and Concepcion (Cantu) Martinez; in-laws Mike and Santos (Espinoza) Couling.

Jose Leandro is survived by his wife of over 60 years, Emma Couling Martinez, a daughter Diana (William) Dolan from Seguin; and a son, Jose Leandro (Cynthia) Martinez Jr. from Corpus Christi. Four adored grandchildren – Mario (Stephanie) Dolan, Dallas, Texas, and Marcus Randal "Randy" (Aubrie) Dolan from Cherry Hill, Colorado; Cecilia Denise Martinez from Atlanta, Georgia, and Jose Leandro (AuBrie) Martinez III from Burbank, California. A sister, Mary O. Miller of Alice, and "Mi Cuniado" Servando (Tencha) Lopez from Freer. He was lovingly called "Popo" by his five great-grandchildren – Elizabeth, Davis, Markie, Ellis Dolan, and Maya Martinez. Jose Leandro has six sisters-in-law, many nieces, nephews, godchildren, and countless friends!

Leandro was a member of St. Peter's church in Ben Bolt, a lifetime member of the Knights of Columbus, and served on the USDA soil and water conservation board. Leandro retired from Texas department of transportation and was a long-time rancher of Duval and Jim Wells County. He loved the South Texas land and community. He had a vast knowledge of genealogy. Jose Leandro never met a stranger and loved to discuss the history of South Texas families. His energy and laughter will be so missed.
