Ivan E. Orthengren

1936 - 2017

Ivan E. Orthengren, 81, of Amarillo passed away Wednesday, September 27, 2017.

Ivan was born February 17, 1936 to Earle and Ardis Samuelson Orthengren in Lincoln, Nebraska. They preceded him in death in 1978 and also preceding him was his younger brother Glenn in 2008.

He married his best friend, Arlayne Monia Orthengren in 1956 in Lincoln and they celebrated 61 years together in June.

Survived by his wife, Arlayne; daughter; Vicki Howard and husband Asa of Amarillo. Son: Alan and wife Karen of Amarillo. Son; Bruce and wife Joelle of Delano, MN. Grandsons: Corey and Trey of Amarillo, David and Steven of Delano, MN

Ivan retired as Mechanical Shop Superintendent of the Burlington Northern Railroad after 42 years. He was transferred many times during his career starting as a carman in Lincoln and being transferred throughout the Midwest to Alliance, NE; Denver, CO; Childress, TX; St. Cloud, MN; Arden Hills, MN and after being transferred to Ft. Worth he retired and they built their home in Decatur, TX where they lived for 10 years before moving to Amarillo to be closer to family.

He was an avid, lifelong collector and loved all things farming. Restored many tractors, toys and made multiple wood projects where he could fix almost anything. He and Arlayne enjoyed attending and participating in tractor shows and activities throughout the Midwest.

He was proud of his service in the Nebraska National Guard, Masonic Lodge, and Shrine. He was a member of Panhandle Antique Tractor Assn. and The Stearns County Pioneer Club. He was a Methodist.

Celebration of his life and Memorial services will be scheduled at a later date. Arrangements are by Schooler Funeral Home 4100 S. Georgia St. Amarillo, Texas.
