Margaret Ann (Winters) Smith
Margaret Ann (Winters) Smith, a long-time resident of Ames passed away peacefully at Windsor Manor in Nevada, Iowa on May 30, 2021 at the age of 95.
Visitation and funeral will both be held on Friday, June 4, 2021 at Calvary United Methodist Church, 1403 24th Street, Ames, Iowa. Visitation begins at 10:00 am and the funeral will follow at 11:00 am. Burial will be at the Ames Municipal Cemetery.
Margaret Ann was born on October 18, 1925 in Georgetown, Illinois to Ernest and Melba (Shepler) Winters. She married the love of her life, Dwight L. Smith, on July 22, 1945 while he was on leave after his destroyer was sunk in the World War II Pacfic Theater. The couple loved each other deeply and raised their five children: Stephanie (David) Mayberry of Elm Grove, WI, Rebecca (Larry) Witten of Peoria, AZ, Bruce Smith, West Des Moines, IA, Melba (Kurt) Olson of Ames, IA and David (Bea) Smith of Ames, IA. Throughout their lives Dwight and Margaret Ann found their homes in Illinois (Aleto, Monmouth, and Georgetown), Iowa (Cedar Rapids and Ames), Raleigh, NC, and Scottsdale, AZ.
Margaret Ann graduated from Georgetown High School in 1943 and while raising five children she earned her Bachelor of Science in Elementary Education from Iowa State University in 1965. Margaret Ann was a caring wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister, aunt, and friend. She loved her family dearly and had many wonderful friends and business associates around the world.
Margaret Ann taught school in Slater, Iowa and Raleigh, North Carolina and spent many years substitute teaching in Ames, Iowa. She also worked with the Head Start program in Raleigh, North Carolina. Margaret Ann and Dwight started a marketing business that led them to travel the world. They were also motivational speakers throughout the United States, Australia, and across Europe.
She will be deeply missed by her 18 grandchildren, (Mayberry) Laura, Matthew, Teresa, Paul, and Lizzi; (Mathison) Rozalynn and Lily; (Smith) Sabrina (Edginton), Mercedes, Kaitlyn, Sterling, and Delaney; (Olson) Nicole, Lindsey and Paige; (Smith) Emily, Holly and Sally; 18 great-grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews.
She is preceded in death by husband Dwight Smith; sister and brother-in-law Ruth and Don Naudzius; parents Ernest and Melba Winters; brother Jimmie Winters; brothers-in-law Dean Smith, Donald Smith, and Dale Smith; and grandchildren Shawn Smith and Brenda Mayberry.
Margaret Ann loved golfing, traveling to beaches around the world, spoiling her dogs and grandchildren, and playing bridge. She enjoyed watching her grandchildren participate in many activities and athletic events and she was avid fan of Iowa State, Chicago Bulls, and the Phoenix Sun.
Funeral arrangements are under the direction of the Adams Funeral Home and online condolences may be left for Margaret Ann's family at In lieu of flowers, memorials in Margaret Ann's name may be directed to Suncrest Hospice or Windsor Manor, where she received excellent care.
