Paul Hahn Obituary

Paul B. Hahn, 66, of Zearing, passed away Thursday, Dec. 14, at the University of Iowa Hospital in Iowa City. Memorial services will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 13, 2007, at Bethel Church in Boone. Burial will be at a later date in Oak Ridge, Tenn.

Born in Detroit, Mich., Paul was the son of Richard B. and Constance L. Hahn. He received his high school diploma from Denby High School in Detroit, and later graduated from the University of Michigan with a bachelor of science degree in chemistry. After a short career with the U.S. Public Health Service as a health physicist, he went on to earn his master's degree and PhD at Iowa State University in analytical chemistry. Paul then enjoyed a distinguished 20-plus year career with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency in Las Vegas, Nev., in various management and technical positions. He most enjoyed his participation in emergency radiation response exercises and his work as a radiochemist managing the preparation of standards supplied to testing laboratories worldwide.

Paul had a lifelong passion for ice hockey, photography and astronomy. As a hockey enthusiast, he played in adult leagues and coached youth hockey in several states including Michigan, Massachusetts, Nevada, Tennessee and Iowa. During his studies at Iowa State in the late 1960s, he was actively involved with their first intramural hockey program and played games on the outdoor arena behind State Gym on the ISU campus. He would later reconnect with Iowa State Hockey when his two children participated in the program. He was also a co-coach of the ISU Division II men's hockey team from 2000 to 2004. As a photography enthusiast, Paul captured a vast collection of inspiring photographs from his travels, and his experiences with his family and close friends.

Paul was a member of the Zearing Christian Church.

He is survived by his father, Richard B. Hahn, of Boone; brother, Thomas Hahn and his wife Sigrid, of St. Petersburg, Fla.; son, Richard and his wife Leigh, of Ogden; daughter, Christine Kelley and her husband Christopher, of Overland Park, Kan., and four grandchildren, Maranda, Derek, Rachel and Daniel.
