James Wood Obituary

James Nixon "Nick" Wood Jr., a cherished husband, father, grandfather, and decorated Veteran, passed away on September 1, 2025, in Slidell, Louisiana, at the age of 77. Born on April 9, 1948, in Natchez, Mississippi, to James and Charlotte Wood, Nick's life was a testament to his natural strength and unwavering dedication to his family and country. Nick spent most of his youth in Laurel, Mississippi, where he cultivated a life of work and commitment. After attending Jones County Junior College, he enlisted in the United States Marine Corps as a private and demonstrated exceptional leadership, rising to the rank of Lieutenant, leaving with the rank of Captain. His bravery and valor were recognized during his deployment to the Vietnam War, having been awarded a Bronze Star with a combat "V" for valor and a Purple Heart. Nick married the love of his life, Laurie Jean Roberts, also of Laurel, MS, and furthered his academic pursuits at the University of Southern Mississippi in Hattiesburg. He earned his CPA at Price Waterhouse and began specializing in tax accounting. He then continued his career at Louisiana Land and Exploration Company, where he managed the Tax Department before becoming Assistant Controller, later retiring at 50 as Controller and Vice President, roles where he handled several mergers and acquisitions for the company and was instrumental in the sale of the company's oil refinery in Mobile. He was also responsible for the corporate real estate sales and acquisitions all over North America. Nick's heart was truly revealed in his role as a family man. He was a devoted spouse to his loving wife, Laurie Wood, for 55 years. Together, they raised two children, James Wood (Catina) and Wendy Anderson, instilling in them the values of love, integrity, and kindness. Nick's legacy continued to flourish through his five perfect grandchildren: Lukas, Laurel, Layna, James, and Paige, each of whom brought him immense joy and pride. Nick was a man who led by example, showing kindness and compassion in every interaction. His laughter and wise counsel will be profoundly missed by all who had the privilege of knowing him. A quiet time of rest and remembrance is the family's wish. Memories and condolences may be expressed at www.AudubonFuneralHome.com
