John Cupit Obituary

"I have fought a good fight, I have finished my course, I have kept the faith" 2 Timothy 4:7. It is with a heavy heart and profound sadness that the Cupit Family announces the passing of our beloved patriarch whose life touched so many, leaving an indelible mark on the hearts of family, friends, and community alike. As we gather our thoughts and memories, let us take a moment to honor his journey, celebrate his legacy, and find comfort in the example they left behind. Born to John & Mary Cupit in Liberty, Mississippi on June 17, 1936, John Ellis Cupit, Jr. departed this life on July 27, 2025, at 89 years of age. He was the oldest of six sons. John was a Baton Rouge City Police officer and retired at the rank of Deputy Chief with 48 ½ years of service. John also served the community as a Shriner and as a Perpetual Mason, who achieved his 32nd Degree within the Scottish Rite. He also served as a Chapter and State Officer as well as a National Delegate for the Baton Rouge Fraternal Order of Police Lodge #1. Preceding in death are his parents and brothers, Wayne, Murray, Mike and Jerry Cupit and his half-brother James Cupit and his wife, Shirley Cupit. He was also predeceased by his daughter, Mary Ann Cupit Burnett, and his nephews, Glynn Cupit and Rapheal Cupit. He is survived by his wife of 69 years, Genie Wicker Cupit, step-mother, Mary Cupit, sons, John E. Cupit IV (Beth), Frank Cupit (Terry) and son-in-law, Jeff Burnett; grandchildren, Felicia Cupit Flotte (Jeremy), Joshua Cupit (Diana) and Sarah Cupit Vince (Tony), Kayla Burnett Langley (Michael), Dean Burnett (Kathy), Tristian Burnett (Brea), Noah Burnett (Riley), Gabriel and Aaron Burnett, Nikki Cupit (Blake), John Ellis Cupit V (Megan). He is survived by several great grandchildren, including Christopher (Ryleigh) Holmes, Cameron Holmes, Ethan Cupit, Gage McGraw, Conlee Flotte, Cort McGraw, Bronson Bennett, Emberlynn Faith, Lane Langley, and Minor Wayne Burnett, as well as great-great grandchildren Levi, Layton, and Scarlett Holmes. He is also survived by many nieces, nephews, cousins, and their families who provided love and support during John's life. The family thanks all who have offered their loving thoughts and support during this challenging time. As Winston Churchill once said, "We make a living by what we get, but we make a life by what we give." These words resonate deeply as we reflect on a life defined by service, sacrifice, and unwavering dedication to the community and his family, reminding us all of the enduring impact one individual can have through selfless acts. Visitation at First Baptist Church of Greensburg from 5:00PM until 9:00PM on Monday and from 8:00AM until religious services at 10:00AM on Tuesday, August 5, 2025. Services conducted by Rev. Shawn Ostoj. Interment Resthaven Gardens of Memory, Baton Rouge, LA. For an online guestbook, visit http://www.mckneelys.com.

Ellis, my late husband's cousin was a wonderful man, always full of mischief. He NEVER missed a chance to gig me about being from Livingston Parish, but I NEVER missed a chance to hand it right back to him. I always told him that he was just jealous because he wasn't from Livingston Parish! LOL. Our conversations usually started with him telling my late husband, J.R. How he felt sorry for him having to live with someone from Livingston Parish, then laugh, knowing each time he said that he would get a response from this LPG! This went on for years, & I don't know which one of us loved it more, or which one of us Loved the other one more. I feel Blessed to have known such a Prince of a man, but I know he and J.R. have plenty to discuss in Heaven, and neither of them would ever want to return to this old world, now. They are residing in the place that "I can only Imagine"! How Awesome that must be! Love you my Buddy❣ One day, you're going to have to move over to make room up there for this old Livingston Parish Girl! Don't you be talking to St Peter about keeping them gates closed on me because if you do, I'll just remind him where I'm from and I'm sure He'll let me on in, and probably let me sit between you & J.R. . You're definitely One of the "Good Ones" & I'll Always Love You❣ So Long for Now RIP

The many, many conversations we had will be missed. From riding to and from work and lunches we shared at BRPD will never be forgotten. He was my friend before I meeting his son and marrying into the Cupit family. I never doubted his love for me. From bluegrass festivals to the many vacations we shared. I have so many happy memories to look back on. He’ still the “Best Man” from our wedding. His spirit will remain alive in our hearts as we live this life without him. Thank you for being my “Second Daddy”. I will forever love you! “Terry Faye”

The childhood I hadthe many different adventures we took; those are my favorite memories! The vacations were endless and nothing short of amazing! But nothing will ever top our summers in Tennessee meeting celebrities and collecting endless pictures and kisses with my main man, Conway Twitty! None of those things would have been possible without you and MawMaw and I will forever hold those memories and many more close to my heart!

We will be together again one day, and I promise I’ll listen to all the bluegrass you want! I love you PawPaw and thank you for the wonderful childhood I got to experience!!

Always,
