Gilliland , Daniel Paul 12/10/1943 - 9/14/2021 Ann Arbor, Michigan Daniel Paul Gilliland, age 77, died unexpectedly on September 14, at St Joseph's Mercy Hospital, Ann Arbor from heart failure after surgery. He was born in Fremont, Michigan to Russell and Jeane Gilliland. Survivors include his beloved and occasionally exasperated but loving wife of 42 years, Betty-Ann; his daughter, Jeanne (Keith Devlin); his favorite granddaughter, Josie Devlin; and numerous nieces. Dan received his dental degree at the University of Michigan in 1969 and MS in 1973. He specialized in endodontics and ran his own practice with offices in Ann Arbor and Jackson. He then took a four-year break to earn his BA in Spanish at U of M graduating in 2008. Subsequently he joined Endodontics PC as an associate and practiced in Monroe, Michigan. Since 1984, he has also been an Adjunct Professor at the U of M Dental School working with graduate endodontic students. And what did Dan do in his spare time? Anything that interested him he tackled with great gusto. He raced sports cars at Road Atlanta, competed in endurance racing in the Daytona 24 and Sebring 12, and then took up road rallying (after convincing his wife to navigate for him) and won The North American Rally Cup for Production Class in 1987 and 1988. He also played golf, various racquet sports, skied the Rockies (where he originally met his Canadian wife), enjoyed fly fishing (tying his own flies) and competitive skeet shooting (loading his own shells) and harvested wood on his property, where he was most content. He tried his hand at carpentry, pasta making, welding, and beekeeping. He had a wide eclectic taste in music ranging from John Prine to Astor Piazzolla to Handel. And what will Dan be remembered for? For his big heart, his warm hugs, his infectious laughter, his generous and optimistic spirit, his deep appreciation of nature, his curiosity and pursuit of lifelong learning, and always his desire for excellence. But Dan will also be remembered for the gaping hole he leaves behind within his family and his large circle of friends. A full life, but cut short. A visitation will take place Sunday, September 19, 2021 from 3-6pm and the funeral service will be held on Monday, September 20, 2021 at 11am with visitation beforehand at 10am at Nie Family Funeral Home, 3767 W. Liberty Rd., Ann Arbor, MI 48103. The family is requesting that guests wear masks while in attendance. Please visit www.niefuneralhomes.com for more information.
