Perhaps it's a bit unusual to count as a good friend and mentor someone whom you never have met, personally. I became acquainted with Bill during the late 1990's through a classical music blog. We discovered we had some similar interests and so began a correspondence that lasted until his passing.
Several things became apparent during over 20 years of correspondence: he was very proud of his sons and their families and cared deeply for them; he was passionate about the lack of attention to and performance of African classical music. Thanks to Bill, I now have a greater appreciation for it, but my knowledge and care don't begin to approach his expertise.
Bill often sent photos of his grandchildren's construction projects, made from blocks that he kept in his closet; a prize winning essay written by Lea; and many colorful drawings and paintings. He always kept snacks in his pantry that all of his grandchildren enjoyed.
One of the things I enjoyed most about our correspondence was trying to find composers with whom Bill wasn't familiar. It was a daunting task. We always purchased CDs for the other at the winter holidays and our respective birthdays. I always waited, with great anticipation, to hear whether he already had the CDs I'd sent in his collection or whether they were new to him. After hearing the news, he would always play them for his friend, Henry, to see whether or not he could "stump" him.
To Bill's family members: I hope you will accept my deepest sympathy and condolences during this time of loss. Perhaps Bill would hope that you remember all of the things he accomplished during his lifetime, but most of all, his care, concern and love for all of you. I will miss hearing from him.
Sincerely,
Lyn Brown

I'm so sorry to hear of the passing of my old friend, Bill. Bill was a longtime neighbor of mine at the Summit View Condominium complex. You couldn't ask for a nicer neighbor, or a more interesting one. His knowledge ranged from constitutional law to African American classical music. A dedicated progressive, he and I talked about politics many a time. Bill bore the burden of his physical problems with grace and good humor. Rest in peace, Bill. You will not be forgotten.
