Carolyn Dobson Brooks

1932 - 2021

A Celebration of Life service for Mrs. Carolyn Dobson Brooks, 89, of Jacksonville, will be announced at a later date. Mrs. Brooks passed away September 6, 2021, at NE Alabama Regional Medical Center. Carolyn was born on May 6, 1932 in the community of Malone, Randolph County, Alabama. She was the second of four daughters born to Chink Bruce Dobson and Ila Pearl Bassett Dobson. Carolyn's grandparents were William Washington Dobson, Ludy Jackson Dobson, Thomas Jefferson Bassett and Josephine Sherrer Bassett. She attended elementary school in Wedowee, Alabama until the sixth grade, when her family moved to Roanoke, Alabama. There she graduated from Knight Enloe School and attended Handley Middle and High School. Carolyn then graduated from Anniston Memorial Hospital School of Nursing becoming a registered nurse. She married First Lieutenant "Pete" Buford Brooks. Carolyn enjoyed being a "career" military wife. Along with raising two children, she enjoyed serving in the Protestant Women of the Chapel and the Officers Wives' Club at several Army installations in the U.S. and Germany. Carolyn's role in these organizations included President and Volunteer of the Year at Fort Knox, Kentucky. When Pete retired from the Army, the couple moved to Anniston, Alabama. Carolyn loved the Anniston Museum of Natural History, serving as a docent. Because of her dedication, Carolyn was awarded the Bennie award for volunteer of the year. She also devoted much of her time to the Salvation Army Auxiliary, where she served as president of the auxiliary and on the board. During their time in Anniston, Carolyn and Pete were active members in the First United Methodist Church. Later the couple moved to Jacksonville, Alabama, the city in which Carolyn and Pete had their first date. They became active members in the First United Methodist Church there. She also became very involved in the Friendship Sunday School class and the Ruth Circle. She was thoughtful, kind, caring; full of faith, hope, and love. Carolyn was soft-spoken yet had a tremendous internal strength. Carolyn's lifelong relationship and bond she had with her three sisters, Sarah (Jack) McKay, Jo (Robert) Kicker, and Judy (William) Roberts, was remarkable. She loved to read and knew her way around in the kitchen. In her later years, Carolyn relished life's simple pleasures: watching the wildlife in her yard, taking care of her plants, especially her orchids, attending virtual church, and mealtimes with family. She will especially be missed by her loving and faithful husband of 63 years, Colonel Pete Brooks, US Army, (ret); her children, Jonathan (Katie) Brooks of Stratford, Connecticut and Leslie (Robert) Best of Arlington, Virginia; her grandchildren, granddaughters Cayleigh Brooks and Kara Brooks of Connecticut and grandson Jonathan Best and granddaughter Caroline Best of Virginia; her sisters, Jo (Robert) Kicker, and Judy (William) Roberts; and an aunt, Sue Pike. In lieu of flowers or memorials, Carolyn suggests you take a walk, visit a friend, read a book, or plant a flower, preferably a red rose or zinnia.
