Services to celebrate the life of Dr. Jimmy "Jim" Wayne Shurbutt, 43, of Fairfax, Virginia, (formerly of Alexandria), will be held on Saturday, April 1, 2023, at 12:00 p.m. at Anniston Memorial Funeral Home, with Bro. Thomas Moates officiating. Following the service, burial will be held in Anniston Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends at Anniston Memorial Funeral Home one hour prior to the service. Jim was a wonderful husband, a loving father, a devoted son and brother, and an exceptional friend. Leaving those who loved him so dearly, on Thursday, March 23, 2023, has left a void in the hearts of many. Jim was preceded in death by his father, Jimmy Ray Shurbutt; his mother-in-law, Denise Hase; grandparents, Charlie and Maude Shurbutt and Elbert and Connie Sides; and one special uncle, Jerry Shurbutt.
Left to cherish Jim's memory, his laughter, and his legacy, are his wife of seven years, Michele Shurbutt; his adored daughter, Karli Shurbutt; his mother, Darlene Shurbutt; his sister, Melissa "Missy" Hall (Jay); two nieces, Breanna and Kaitlin Watson; his sister-in-law, Stacey Watson (Phillip); and his uncle, Norman Shurbutt. Jim was born in Anniston, Alabama, on October 5, 1979. He graduated from Alexandria High School with the Class of '97. Upon graduation, Jim attended Gadsden State Community College and Jacksonville State University (JSU), where he obtained his Bachelor of Science degree in Psychology. Following his BS degree, Jim went on to pursue his Master of Science degree in Psychology from JSU and lastly earned a PhD in Psychology from Western Michigan University (WMU). Jim met the love of his life, Michele, while attending JSU and they married in 2016. Jim was employed by the FHWA, where he worked as a Program Manager for the Federal Highway in Virginia. In his spare time, Jim loved spending time outdoors and thoroughly enjoyed fishing. His daughter, Karli, was the "apple of his eye" and he never wasted a moment in making as many memories as he could with her. To know Jim was to love him, and those who knew him so well understood his love for animals (of all kinds), his passion for Alabama football, and his desire to be the best husband and father to his wife and daughter. Jim will be greatly missed, but forever remembered. Pallbearers will be Phillip Watson, Jerrod Brown, Vance Brown, Heith Hase, Matt Wall, Brian Barber, Bobby Baker and Scott Ramsey.
