Dear Ajax, Karen, Richard, Eric,

I’m mourning with you the loss of your Father. Such sad news, but I have to tell you that remembering him is not a sorrowful experience for me.

I haven’t known many who loved life the way he did and who lived it with the joy he did. It’s been years since I’ve spent any time with him -- I think the last time I saw him was at my Dad’s eightieth. By then, I’d been here in Vermont for years, and your Dad had seen John far more often than he’d seen me. It took him a couple of tries to separate the two of us in his mind. He did, though, and we had a nice visit.

He was Dad to you and Doc Leitner to most everyone else, but he was Uncle Tony to me, and Uncle Tony is a glorious memory. What fun. What laughter. What a sense of adventure, and oh, how he carried us all along with him in his pleasure.

I remember the plays, the shows and skits we performed and how much he loved them. I remember pig roasts and raucous lobster dinners and Uncle Tony loving a joke or a story or a witticism (and god knows there were plenty of those) so much that he had to hear it over again and we all laughed the second time harder than we did the first.

I remember sunshine and salt spray, the sound of wind in the rigging and the wash and rush of his (our) beloved Sea Feather’s wake as she carried us up and down the coast. I remember Uncle Tony at the helm; sunglasses and a smile of pure pleasure.

As I’m picturing him and remembering all those wonderful times, I’m writing this with a catch in my throat, and I can’t tell whether it’s sorrow or an incipient laugh. Sorrow, certainly. No. No, it’s both, and I’m sure he’d be glad to know that.

Dear Karen, A, Eric and Richard,
Your dad will always live on through you and yours. For me, he'll always be a dashing young man, married to your beautiful mom.
Thank you for sharing him with me.
Love,
Ingrid

To "Doc"

The Navy prayer, a.k.a the Sailors's Psalm:
"The Lord is my pilot, I shall not go adrift; He lighteth my passage across dark channels; He steereth me through the deep waters, He keepeth my log. He guideth me by the evening star for my safety's sake. Yea, though I sail mid the thunders and tempest of life, I shall fear no peril for Thou art with me. The vastness of thy sea upholds me. Surely fair winds and safe harbors shall be found all the days of my life; And I shall moor, fast, and secure, forever
Amen."

Fair Winds and Safe Harbors Tony,
Love, PC Vicky Jo Neiner
