Arthur Markowitz Obituary

Arthur Markowitz

Tinton Falls - Arthur Markowitz passed away on Tuesday, May 8th, 2018. He was born in the Bronx, New York on December 27, 1930 to Max and Rose Markowitz, Romanian refugees who had fled the anti-Jewish pogroms of Eastern Europe in the early 1900s to embrace freedom and liberty in America. Arthur's childhood was shaped by the challenges of the Great Depression. His family welcomed a second wave of Jewish immigrants to New York City prior to the Holocaust, among them a Polish-Austrian couple who moved into the apartment across the hallway from the Markowitz's. Their daughter, Joan Spitzbart, was destined to fall in love with Arthur. They were married for 57 years, until Joan's passing in 2013.

Arthur worked as a merchandiser in Manhattan's garment district. He relocated his family from the Bronx to Long Island, then to Queens, and finally to Westchester County where he later worked as a Larchmont realtor. He eventually moved to Tinton Falls, New Jersey after Joan's death, to be closer to family.

Arthur's family was his highest priority. He did not simply enjoy being a father, he reveled in it. Countless 1960s afternoons and evenings were spent laughing and playing with his two young boys, creating happy memories for all. He was a good listener who offered both a sympathetic ear and well-meaning advice. He valued being home for dinner every night with his family, going so far as to refuse a promotion at work for that very reason. He assisted his parents as they struggled with the infirmities of advancing age. He was a devoted husband who provided care and comfort to his ailing wife. He took pride in his two sons' accomplishments, and he loved their wives as if they were his own daughters. He was thankful to have lived long enough to know his grandchildren and his first great-grandchild.

Arthur is survived by Dr. Charles Markowitz and wife Meryl of Ocean Township and by Dr. Bruce Markowitz and wife Debbie of Efrat, Israel. He will be fondly remembered by six treasured grandchildren: Shoshana, Sara, Binyamin, Bryan, Eliana, and Liora and, his great-grandson Ori

He had been a member of Congregation Anshe Sholom in New Rochelle, New York. He will be laid to rest with his beloved Joan at Mt. Hebron Cemetery in Queens, New York today at 1:30PM.

Arthur was a childhood friend, who I got back in contact with after his brother, Ira's passing. I also knew his wife, Joan, since they both lived in the same building as my aunt, Pauline and my cousins, Marilyn, Muriel and Louis. Arthur and I went to Public School 70 and Joseph H. Wade Junior High School. I have a school photo of our 6th grade graduating class with Arthur in it. He probably has the same photo. Please accept my sincerest condolences! I will miss speaking to him. Elaine Giller Sacks, Boynton Beach, Florida
